Extra brace / stand on motorbikes

Does anyone know what the additional heavy duty brace / stand on motorbikes in BKK is used for? I don't have a picture but they are attached on the swing arm near the back axle I believe. It looks like one leg of a tripod that can be extended down.

Upcountry they are used by the guys who deliver gas (cooking LPG) cylinders. The leg is put down to stabilise the bike as the rider only takes one cylinder in at a time and you don't really want those falling off now do you?

Same thing in Bangkok too. I see them all the time delivering gas to small food stands etc.
