sbk Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 OK, so I have my bookmarks and docs backed up so its not a big deal, just a bit annoying but ... here's the problem. I created a new admin account and a new limited user acct. However, when I start the computer it automatically logs in to the orig. admin account. No welcome screen, no password request. I tried adding a password, and it still logged straight through. I tried deleting the password and checking in User accounts to see if show welcome screen was checked (it was, in both accounts). When I log out it shows the welcome screen. Now what?

sbk Posted August 23, 2006 Author Posted August 23, 2006 Ours is public, so I don't want anyone to have access to anything with admin rights without a password. But supposedly if you delete all users except the admin one, go into User accounts and uncheck the box that says show welcome screen and uncheck the box that has fast user switching, that should do it. Theoretically, if you do all that in reverse you will get the welcome screen login page after booting up. Which I am not getting

Hi sbk, what Windows you use? Is it a pre-installed on the laptop? Have you the original CD? This problems is very well know to be happens with "cracked" Windows Versions! To solve you need to edit the registry! And you need to replace the winlogon.exe with the original one. Be aware, not a easy job, you need to have the knowledge or someone who have the knowledge to do this!

I have an original winxp sp2 disk, can I use that to repair windows? problem, of course, is then I lose all the hotfixes he already installed. I am probably not good enough to edit the registry, but since the computer has already been wiped clean once am willing to give it a shot, if that is my last resort.
Tywais Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 Try holding the shift key down while the system is booting and see if it will get you to the login window. If it does then you can use Tweakui to reset the login. XpPowertoys
sbk Posted August 23, 2006 Author Posted August 23, 2006 OK, I used tweakui in the account, but not at login, does that make a difference?
taxexile Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 editing the registry is not that difficult , you just need a steady hand and balls of steel , (sorry sbk , in your case a steady hand and a womans touch!). so long as you have the correct values to insert , and the instructions that you are given are correct , it is no different to editing a word document , but like heart surgery , the slightest error could prove fatal.

OK, if you have the original CD, try to "repair": CD in the drive and boot from the CD. Ignore the first screen with option "repair", hit enter and after the EULA screen (End User License Agreement) where you hit F8 to agree, a screen should come with another "repair" option. This Option use, you will not lose any data, drivers and so on and normaly even the "hotfixes" are there. If this screen do not come you will be not able to repair, only a new installation. But anyway, it is not a problem with original, just activate again and you can download and install all fixes from Microsoft.com If you need to activate via phone, the Tel.No. they give you is toll free and work well. If they ask you why need to reactivate tell them that has got a virus and was need to reformat and reinstall. The whole process need 5-10 minutes. The Tel.No. starts with 001800..... and is located in Singapore but is toll-free.

sbk Posted August 23, 2006 Author Posted August 23, 2006 Well, that is embarrassing, I swear I did not see that autologon option last time I opened tweakui. Of course, it might have been due to my growing frustration with the computer and its aching slowness (the RAM was bad so he took one stick out leaving us with 256k--tomorrow we go back and add another 256k) and the annoyance of having to add all my stuff back again. Cheers tywais, the photo in the other thread helped quite a bit.
