Hi -- sorry if this has been posted and it probably has -- but there are so many posts to weed through so I apologize. Since we don't live at our house in Chiangmai all the time but would like to have internet when we are there, I was wondering if there are these mobile hot spots that you can buy for the house and that uses a prepaid plan -- kinda like the cell phone sim card that lets you call and use data but this is just for data. You buy a certain amount of minutes or GB and when you run out, you can recharge. Can anyone make any recommendations? Thanks!

That is entirely possible.. You can get wifi hotspots which use a GSM sim and you just pick the best data deal while there.

Secondly if your in the city AIS and TOT and others offer paid wifi signal in many places, even my way out of the city moobaan has wifi signal. You can (with some tech fiddling) re-share a wifi signal to a home network with a PC or a better quality wifi AP if you want to have many devices on one account. This will probably be faster and not as bandwidth limited.

The tech forum will have the answers.

Although... cheapest ADSL starts around 350 a month.. That could be worth it even if you're not here all of the time.

And speed is just fine. (Not for downloading whole HD movies, but response time for web browsing and the like is just fine.)

no need to buy an overpriced Mini-WiFi device for 2500 THB as every basic Smartphone nowadays has tethering on board and can be your actual WiFi Hotspot

Not sure where you are at in the city?... But Trumove has 4G here and you con get a prepaid sim with 1.5gb of bandwidth for 299/month... If you run over that you can purchase additional gb for 150 baht... As has been stated you can use a smartphone with thethering or a dedicated mifi (Truemove sells them)... Best to figure out what cell providers work the best at your house - neighbors could tell you...

As many have posted, if you give the area that you would be using this service you could probably get a much better idea from someone that is from that same area.

For instance, where I live is right on the edge of the 3G coverage. Sometimes and some parts of our house can catch the 3G signal and sometimes it does not. A lot of factores, but someone from the general area should be able to give you some worthwhile feedback.
