Need guidance on gettng new Ipad sim and data plan

Featured Replies

Hello,

I will seek to use this advice in Samui, though anyone in Thailand can help me. New Ipad cellular/data ready. I need to get Sim chip and data plan.

I think it is this easy. Is it? Do I just go find DTAC on Samui and ask them to assign me a chip/cell number, and then select a plan?

After I address these two simple questions above I need to know pitfalls or better choices. I saw an option for True that indicated roughly 900 baht for 5 gb. I was told it would then drop from many MBPS to roughly 256k after my 5gb Plan usage. Will the prices then be exceptionally high per/_____?

Do these chips or device allow seamlessly moving immediately into known wireless connections when in range?

I tried to get these questions answered yesterday on Samui, True, TescoLotus, and it was a disaster. Apparently these questions are excessive.

Ok, enough wandering. Does anyone have any guidance and experience to help me get this thing going for the Mrs? I can do it; I just want to do it well.

Thank you.

I have True Nano Data Sim in my new iPad and it works fantastic everywhere I went so far in Thailand. Not been to Samui yet but in Bangkok, Pattaya, Hua Hin and even as far as Chua Kari Khan it has full signal with no problems.

I pay 400 baht for 3 gig data valid for 1 month only.

If you have an iPhone as well put all your data on that & use it as a hotspot when using the iPad.

Ok, thanks. What happens when/if you go over 3 gb, or do you find you just never do?

Does the ipad then jump to a preferred wifi network if its stored and then comes in range?

Another poster mentioned the iphone as hotspot but this is apples and apples because the iphone would also be using a data plan. But thank you.

I have AIS and if you go over the data plan limit you get charged per Mb if you have credit otherwise it just stops. And yes the iPad will jump onto wifi if in range and the wifi on my plan is unlimited. However if you go off wifi and you are downloading a big YouTube video then bang goes your data. So make sure you turn off cellular data for YouTube.

Consider a pocket wifi. Not sure about you but I like the flexibility of having wifi for my laptop, iPad, and phone without needing three separate plans etc. The pocket wifi's are unlocked (at least mine is) so I can switch carriers for all my devices with a single sim swap. Great when you travel outside Thailand too. I was in Japan, grabbed a single sim and was good on all my devices. I can even share wifi with someone. Maybe not for you, just an option. Good luck.

I really like this post above, though I am beginning to feel like my grandmother who railed against the word processor swearing nothing could replace the Underwood typewriter- there is a lot I do not know and it is just amazing what is out there. I will still go for the sim chip for the ipad as the ipad cost so damn much and will be used apart from me but will likely get the above WIFI you mention for myself, for my old ipad WIFI to use. So, it is a very useful post for me. thank you
