I was in Phuket recently and since I had lost my plastic UK driving licence, I carried a copy of the original paper version of the licence. I got stopped at the traffic lights (that do nothing!!) at the end of Soiyuan where the junction goes to Kata or Rawai. I was wearing a helmet. The arrogant little farang who was in charge , I think he is an Aussie, said the licence was no good he had to have the plastic version. THIS IS WRONG. I got fined 500 bhat for not having a licence with me and 500 baht for answering him back. Apparently speaking to these people is not allowed. I was told to pay the money, shut up an lose the attitude, or I would be taken to jail..!! His words. I told him the day I give in to corrupt pieces of sh*t like him is the day they turn the life support machine off..

This area is a regular place where they stop everybody, and make a small fortune in an hour. So even, sober, with a helmet and carrying a licence cannot avoid paying these peoples tea money. They are an absolute disgrace,,,but you cant tell them that or your fine gets doubled !!!

Don Mega --I could not carry he plastic card licence as It was lost and I have applied for a new one., so I carried the original paper copy, which we had before plastic cards.. The plastic card is based on the information on the paper copy...

Original plastic license with photo is required. You did not have that, so were driving without a valid license and the fine was justified. If you live here you need a Thai DL BTW, home license is not valid.

Regarding the 'talking back', 3 days ago he also stopped me, we had a nice chat and a laugh. Seemed a nice guy.

I see no corruption at all in this, but judging from your post the fine for your attitude was also justified.

BS. He was carrying his silly paper UK license (I say "silly" because I recall that the UK paper licenses were huge as well as flimsy). The farang "cop" is on a power trip.

Fair comment Steven. one question, if I was a tourist, how can I get Thai licence?

As a tourist you can get a 1-year license. Go to immigration to apply for a certificate of residence, and with that go to the DLT. At the DLT it will take you about 1 day. Normally though tourists do not need a Thai DL, provided they have their own valid home DL with photo, in English etc.

Sorry, no BS. He was not carrying an in Thailand valid DL. The silly paper UK license is not valid here.

In case of difficulty: You can get an international drivers license in your home country which would have solved the plastic problem anyway...

Very simple, Original DL (with English text) or IDL is required for tourist when in Thailand.

As he did not had this he was driving illegal.

No comments about attitude as i was not there but from experience some tourist are the cause of the problem and not the result of it.

I think its about time that the expats living here start following the rules, regardless of what you think if corruption and what goes with it . A valid DL is required , if no Thai DL you can get an international DL before you leave your home country .

Your post can be confusing: an expat living here requires a valid Thai DL, home license (with or without IDP) is NOT valid.

Ok so my "crime" was not carrying my plastic card licence. I live in CM, i was visiting my friend in hospital in Phuket. Because I know you need to carry a licence, i took my paper licence with me. Surely this should have been accepted, its a legal document. The reason that i didnt have my plastic card was because it was lost and my a new one will be delivered to my sisters house in Scotland and she will send it to me.

Surely these traffic BIB and their farang helper would be better occupied actually trying to improve the way people drive in Phuket, like driving on the correct side of the road, with helmets on, with a maximum of 2 on a bike, you know dangerous illegal things ?!! But no, far easier to screw the tourists, for no other reason than to steal money from them. And having a Thai licence is better than my original UK licence ?? its a joke. !!

I know the laws, thats why I tried to follow them as best as I could during the interim period before my plastic card arrived..

A UK drivers licence is the Paper licence. This is commonly supplemented with the Plastic Card.

To legally drive overseas (i.e. In Thailand) an International Drivers Permit is also required to accompany the Paper licence or plastic card licence.

The Op did not have the correct documentation.

As a Tourist he can ride/drive with an IDP for up to 90 days.

Any longer than this he is deemed not to be a tourist and requires a local licence.

One more time, Carrying a paper copy (as admitted in your post) is NOT a DL and thus illegal.

I agree that the BIB can do much more important things but that does not change the fact that you where driving illegal.

Don't do the crime if you can't do the time.

That's the laugh of the day line. Police don't care about improving driving, they care about improving their bottom line.

Perhaps I missed something but I don't understand why he was pulled over in the first place. These so called police assistants or what ever they are called can't do that in their own country without reason why would they lower their values of freedom and pull someone over to try to find something wrong. I would bet they break more laws that most other farang.

It makes me sick to hear of this infringement of freedom being done by people who grew up in a free country.

This is a simple police check, set up in the same place quite often where everybody who is not in possession of DL or nor wearing a helmet gets fined.

Talked with the same man many times, never any problem.

What were you chatting about? How many tickets has he handed out

Are u the reincarnation of Irish Ivan?

Just follow the rules, don't have ur attitude and all is ok. Really dont understand what your problem is with Farang Police assistance, tourist police and whatever person with a bit of authority,

On the other tread you proudly proclaim you tip (bribe) everybody, yet you always seem to hate this particular man? It's not you're Daddy is it? The man is just doing his job and he likes it. It is NOT up to you to decide how another person fill his live ambition.

And NO to answer your question we did not talk about fines because he never gave me 1. Following the rules is not hard to do.

Ok I have to tread lightly here. But my problem is that these guys pull over every farang. But never ever ever hassle Thais. Why is that? If they are cops then they shouldn't discriminate on skin colour

At that checkpoint everybody is stopped. IMO he should not be pulling people over though but limit himself to helping foreigners pulled over by the Thai cops. But it doesn't do any harm and he is assisting many foreigners there. He should start a course in Mandarin though.

He doesn't stop Thais, whenever a Thai national is driving a car he is noticeably quiet. With these types of people they want recognition, they want tourists to say "wow are you a cop in Thailand?" The expats and Thais see straight through them.
