A brothel owner who sent nearly £20,000 abroad to support her four children back home in Thailand has avoided a jail term in Cardiff.

Single mother Thanapan Kaewruang, 45, of Roath, admitted keeping a brothel at a house in the city's Cathays area.

The defendant was given a 12-month sentence, suspended for two years and must do 100 hours of unpaid work.

The court heard she supported her "destitute" family and the money helped to give her children "a happy life".

Cardiff Crown Court judge David Morris was told Kaewruang ran the brothel - called Sweet Oriental Massage - for a year in Dogfield Street.

The brothel earnings amounted to nearly £40,000 but half of the money was sent to Thailand to support her children.

Susan Ferrier, defending, said: "She has committed this offence with the very best intentions.

"She has borne the full responsibility for her family back home and has had no financial support from her former husband.

The judge said Kaewruang knew what she was doing

"She was working as a hairdresser when someone persuaded her she could earn more money from this business.

"The money she received was being used to provide her children with a happy life."

Police discovery

Police found adverts about the brothel and a "thank you" note from a client.

Kaewruang also admitted two charges of converting criminal property - by sending £19,000 of her illegal earnings abroad.

Judge David Morris told her: "You knew what you were doing and I believe you were running this business as a commercial enterprise.

"However the monies you generated were being sent to Thailand to support your destitute family," he said.
