Two injured in Krabi power plant fire

KRABI: -- Two workers were injured in a massive fire that started at the 10-megawatt biomass power plant of Saraff Energies Co Ltd in Krabi's Khao Phanom district at 4 am Wednesday.


The fire burned a pile of oil palm empty fruit bunches and it took 10 fire engines over four hours to control the blaze. The damage was estimated at about Bt100 million.

Shark & turtle fossils unearthed in Kalasin

KALASIN, 8 April 2015 (NNT) – Archeologists in Kalasin province have unearthed fossils of fresh water sharks and turtles, which have now been confirmed as the world’s newly-discovered species of pre-historic animals.


The fossils were excavated in Phu Noi in Kalasin's Kham Muang district. Experts estimated that they are aged over 150 million years. The petrified turtle and shark have been named Phunoichelys thirakhupit and Acrodus kalasinensis respectively.

The excavation began in 2013, during which time thousands of pieces of remains of herbivorous and carnivorous dinosaurs were found. The discovery of the turtle has been publicized in Geological Magazine, whereas that of the freshwater shark has been published in the German journal Paleontologische Zeitschrift.

The press conference has jointly been held by the Kalasin provincial governor, Palaeontological Research and Education Centre of Mahasarakham University and local administrative bodies of Kalasin province.

Samut Prakan set safety measures for water transport in Songkran holidays

SAMUT PRAKAN, 8 April 2015 (NNT) – The Samut Prakan Harbour Master Office has asked water transport providers and the public to cooperate in upholding the safety measures during this year’s Songkran holidays, says the Director.


According to the Director of the Samut Prakan Harbour Master Office Surat Sirisaiyas, the office has imposed safety measures to facilitate the increased water transportation traffic and to reduce the number of accidents due to transport congestion in canals and rivers during this year’s Songkran holidays.

The safety measures demands large sea vessels travelling in and out of the Chao Phraya River estuary to use slow speeds for the convenience of tourist boats. The office will also inspect the piers' and ferries' conditions before they are permitted for operation. Meanwhile all boats and ferries must be equipped with sufficient life saving equipment such as life vests and life buoys.

Related agencies have also been coordinated to conduct the river patrol operations. Officers will be stationed at piers in order to provide assistance and safety protection to the public.

Airforce aircraft dispatched to retrieve Thai workers in Indonesia

BANGKOK, 8 April 2015 (NNT) – The Royal Thai Airforce has dispatched an aircraft on a mission to retrieve Thai workers on the Ambon Island of Indonesia today, says the Airforce spokesman.


The spokesman of the Royal Thai Airforce ACM Monton Satchukorn has revealed that the Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Airforce ACM Trithot Sonjaeng dispatched the C-130H transport aircraft in an operation to retrieve Thai fisheries workers stuck on Ambon Island of Indonesia today.

This operation started today at 9am with 22 officials from the agencies of Royal Thai Airforce participating in this event. Officials in this operation are from the Directorate of Operations, the Directorate of Intelligence, the Directorate of Civil Affairs, the Institute of Aviation Medicine, as well as pilots and crews.

This operation is tasked to retrieve 86 Thai workers back from Ambon Island, and will depart Ambon Island back to Thailand on 9 April 2015 at 5am, in Thailand’s local time.

Bueng Kan locals purchase colorful clothes ahead of the Songkran Festival

BUENG KAN, 8 April 2015 (NNT) - Laotian people in the northeastern province of Bueng Kan have popularized colorful, flowery dresses ahead of the Songkran Festival on April 13-15.


As the Songkran Festival approaches, dress shops in Bueng Kan markets and across the country have been selling all kinds of colorful, flowery shirts and dresses, retailing from 80-250 baht. Public servants, local Thais and Laotians have snapped up the popular Songkran apparel.

Purple dresses have recorded the highest sales, as the color celebrates the 60th birthday anniversary of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

Some government officials and private employees in Thailand wear matching outfits in a show of respect to their seniors.

Songkran Day on April 13 marks the traditional lunar new year for 2015 in Thailand as well as neighboring Lao People’s Democratic Republic.
