Chao Phraya river piers renovated

BANGKOK, 10 April 2015 (NNT) - The Marine Department has injected 70 million baht to renovate 17 piers along the Chao Phraya river and build 19 more to connect with electric train stations.

Permanent Secretary for Transport Soithip Traisut said the department had signed a contract to renovate the 17 piers so that they would be more modern and safer for boat passengers. Phrannok, Ratchawong and Si Phraya piers would be renovated first by September 2015 and the rest by September next year, she said.

There is a total of 35 piers in the Chao Phraya river. The crowded ones which needed repair work would be improved to ensure higher safety for the public, said the permanent secretary.

As for the development of the 19 new piers, Ms Soithip said they would have the same closed system as electric train stations and a one-ticket system. The department was discussing the matter with the Treasury Department and would likely allow the private sector to construct the piers.

The one-ticket system is expected to start in August next year.

Sathon, Nonthaburi and Pin Klao are three pilot piers which have been developed with 100% investment from the private sector.

"the department had signed a contract to renovate the 17 piers"

It might be interesting to know who the contractor is and how selection was made. As I recall, the Junta reformed the procurement process that required competitive bidding over sole source contracting in order to reduce corruption and improve transparency. Also, since three pilot piers are being developed with 100% investment from the private sector instead of government funding, what is being to assure no current or future conflict of interest or collusion in the projects?

Don't you know that thanks to our dictator everything is fine and that there is not more corruption in Thailand ?

Please inform yourself :-)

So are the piers all repaired and built now? Nonthaburi pier is a filthy mess though, i don't even want to walk around that area because it's disgusting.

Being on the river is great but it's time for better new boats and they should sail untill 10 pm or so.

Did anybody see one of those new piers? And are there also passengerboats stopping there allready?

I wished they took rivertransport more serious.
