Roi-Et Has Seen the Highest Number of Fatalities During Songkran

Featured Replies

Thailand continued its Songkran celebrations yesterday as the Road Safety Centre reported that 251 have died during the New Year festivities. Roi-Et has had the highest number of fatalities at 11.

During the holiday monitoring period, 2,406 road accidents have occurred and 2,532 injuries. The most accidents occurred in Nakhon Si Thammarat at 94 where 98 people were injured. During Monday’s celebrations, 671 accidents injured 724 people and killed 60. Drunk driving caused roughly 44% of the accidents, while speeding accounted for 24%. Motorcycles were involved in approximately 82% of the incidents.

At checkpoints, police charged over 100,000 motorists for driving without a license and failing to wear a helmet. Half of the accident victims were of working age. A third of accidents occurred between 4pm and 8pm and more than half were on a straight stretch of road.

As the celebrations begin winding down, only 10 provinces can claim to have no road accident fatalities: Phichit, Trang, Phuket, Beung Kan, Ratchaburi, Yala, Mae Hong Son, Samut Sakhon, Loei and Samut Songkhram.

Police arrested three women in the Buri Ram province for dancing obscenely in front of the King Rama I monument. Four trucks have been impounded for disturbing the public with loud noise. Two men have also been arrested for alleged police obstruction.

Forget about the deaths and injuries, because of drunk driving and excessive speed.

This is the crime of the century.

Does Roi Et get a prize? These articles always seem like they are proud to me.

Doesn't surprise me, I taught school in Roi-et province and the drivers were by far the worst I've seen. There were very few days went by that I didn't have close call, someone cutting me off or driving on the wrong side of the road.

There is a wrong side of the road in Thailand?? Thought it was which ever side was easier!!

Don't worry, some of them are behind bars for their whole lives. facepalm.gif
