NRC member says new electoral system would not make for efficient government

BANGKOK, 22 April 2015 (NNT) - Seri Suwanpanond of the National Reform Council (NRC) has insisted that the draft constitution must be concise, and voiced his opposition to the new mixed member proportional (MMP) system of electing members of the House of Representatives.

Mr. Seri, who serves as chairman of the NRC’s committee on law and justice system reform, said the charter drafters should condense the new constitution and adhere to international models of governance.

In addition, he argued that the new MMP system will be susceptible to political interference, and that any coalition government resulting from the new system would be a weak and ineffective administration.

He proposed that the House instead be derived solely of two Members of Parliament per constituency.

Mr. Seri said that he would give his vote in favor of the draft charter if it still contains the provisions he highlighted.
