Southern residents warned of Malaria spread

SONGKHLA, 25 April 2015 (NNT) – The Office of Disease Prevention and Control Region 12 in Songkhla Province has warned residents in southern provinces of the Malaria disease. It says precautions should be taken both at home and when traveling to high-risk areas.

The warning has been made in conjunction with World Malaria Day 2015, which is observed on 25 April every year. This year’s theme set for the fight against the disease is "Invest in the Future: Defeat Malaria”.

Malaria is the world's most important parasitic infectious disease. It is transmitted by mosquitoes which breed in fresh or occasionally brackish water. After being infected, most people begin falling ill 10-14 days, according to the Director of the Office of Disease Prevention and Control Region 12.

The symptoms of malaria include fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, nausea and vomiting, diarrhoea, anaemia, and jaundice. If a person experiences repeated cold and fevers, he or she is suspected to have been infected with Malaria. They must go to see the doctor immediately and inform their trips to woods or risky places. Even though the disease is curable but it causes difficulty in earning a living and daily activities. Infected person may die from various complications.

According to official statistics, 230 people have been found with malaria in seven provinces in the lower South between 1 Jan and 18 Apr 2015. Most, or 163 of them are in Yala, followed by 48 in Narathiwat and 19 in Songkhla. No death has been reported so far.

Self protection from Malaria are to stay in a good-condition sleeping net or use mosquito repellents. In malaria-hit areas, people should soak their sleeping nets into mosquito repellent liquid to double its protection.
