Car Leasing in Chiang Mai / Long Term Rental?

Recommended Posts

Hey All,

It's come time to look at upgrading from the motorcycle to a car.

Did my due dilligence on google search and on thaivisa forums. Seems that its not very economical to lease a vehicle through the car dealerships, and the best option is to go through a long term rental or lease.

What kind of vehicle might I be able to get for 15-20,000 baht per month? Is it reasonable to expect a small compact car with working air conditioning? Will there be insurance provided? Will I be responsible for fixing it if it breaks down?

Can someone recommend a reputable dealer in Chiang mai for leasing vehicles?

Thanks

If you do long term rental from someone privately, you need to take great care that the insurance is OK. There are many people in business here renting cars and only paying for private insurance which is fine until something goes wrong.

The kind of money per month that you quoted would pay the financing on a pretty good car if you can come up with a deposit or you can look around for someone selling with say two or three years to run on an agreement that you can get put in your name. We recently bought a 2 year old small family car with less than 20k kilometers for 75k cash and 7500 per month for the balance of the agreement. Cash is always king but this was a fairly painless way to do it.

In my experience a small compact with real full insurance & maintenance should be much much less for a annual lease arrangement. Those sort of rates you quote only apply for a short term rental. If I were looking for a long term lease for a small car then I would be looking more at 7 - 8,000 baht/month. But then again it would be much better to pay a 20% deposit and pay the monthly repayments over 5 years.

Mr Darkside, Can you PM with detail on where you found these prices? I have been to several rental shops and asked about 6month rentals and everyone is quoting me 20,000 +
