Peace TV starts broadcasting via YouTube

BANGKOK: -- PEACE TV began broadcasting on YouTube yesterday after the red-shirt satellite-TV station had its broadcast licence revoked recently by the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission.

Red-shirt co-leader Weng Tojirakarn, a host at Peace TV, said there would be less viewers on the Internet but the station expected its older, loyal fans to eventually learn how to watch its programmes on the Net.

"Our identity is still that of a political TV [station]. They cannot stop us from discussing politics," Weng said.

"We're for a genuinely democratic system with His Majesty the King as head of state. I'm using the word 'genuine' because there are those who claim to be for democracy while in fact are for dictatorship."

Weng claimed that the National Council for Peace Order was behind the Peace TV ban - because it feared the station becoming a threat to the military regime.

He warned the NCPO that any attempt to block Peace TV on YouTube would attract further negative foreign attention to its censorship practices.

Peace TV programming has been adjusted to a daily schedule from 9am to midnight to suit the new medium, said Weng, and most programmes remain the same, though the morning news has been replaced by evening news from 7-9pm.

Weng admitted that some viewers aged over 50 may initially not know how to access Peace TV on the Internet but they were expected to eventually learn how - as their children could easily teach them, while Internet access through smartphone was much more accessible and affordable than in the past.

Sombat Boonngam-anong, the Red Sunday Group leader and a host at Peace TV, said the station's audience on YouTube was a different demographic to those who watched the satellite channel.

"The number of viewers will drop unless Peace TV adjusts its programmes," said Sombat, adding that YouTube clips should be much shorter than satellite TV programmes.

They should be more like a video clip, no longer than 10 minutes each, and be interactive, he said.

Sombat said he would discuss the merits of continuing his weekly show with Peace TV, which was previously 50 minutes.

Weng said the station would wait for a week or two to assess the length and format of its shows. But the programme of Jatuporn Promphan, the red-shirt co-leader and chairman of the United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship, would continue to be two hours long.

Some people have said they would try to access Peace TV even though doing so would be more difficult, while others said it would be more convenient to watch Peace TV on YouTube.

The broadcasting regulator will work closely with the Information and Communications Technology Ministry to monitor Peace TV.

Sombat Leelapata, acting deputy secretary-general of the NBTC, said that if his committee found illegal activities on the online site, the NBTC and the ICT Ministry would consider taking action against the TV operator.

He explained that the NBTC had its own regulations to govern online content, while the ICT Ministry also had related laws including the Computer Crime Act BE 2550 (2007).

In a separate matter yesterday, the broadcasting regulator postponed its decision on whether to take action against two politics-oriented satellite TV channels, 24 TV and Fah Wan Mai, after receiving letters of complaint from consumers. The NBTC secretary-general said his committee wanted to ensure it had sufficient details before making a final decision on these matters.

Good for them in attempting to head off the ""Slants on truth ""..those ..""insidiously hate filled and ready to crush freedom& democracy .....""

The recent announcements by Government even this might not be safe.. ( In Future)

But like dying men the elites are fearful of freedoms and to their last breath will incite revolution by draconian measures.....and ultimately pass into oblivion

A fortune teller told me so

Weng, a true hypocrite, willing to be paid for his parliamentary vote, which he has only because he was nominated to a seat by the criminal he serves.

Hey James, tell us more about democracy on Pluto.

This is dangerous for the viewers. While being broadcasted as TV (I assume it was broadcasted before), watching it was a technically passive act which could not be traced be authorities, the viewers could not be identified, they could only go after the broadcasters.

Moving it to the internet is totally different matter. They don't have to shut down youtube - just say that this content "illegal" and they simply can go after all the viewers, trace them using technology and jail them for 5 years under the computer crime act.

The computer crime act is a really dangerous weapon of free speech oppression.

Wow ... you really are off in your own little world ...

Please remember ... you don't have to believe everything the little Thai wife tells you ... there are "elites" on the Red side also, and from all I've seen, they are far worse than the elites they are attempting to remove.

It doesn't matter if the program is on the INTERNET but if any of the 'presenters' say anything the NCPO finds to be a threat to their understanding of 'harmony' (read 'being a Thaksin mouthpiece') then the 'presenter', if residing in Thailand, will be sent to an army base for some reeducation. Nice try, though, but until the Thaksin influence is stamped out, there will be strict controls on what the Thai populace may be exposed to; politically, that is. This, and many other actions by the NCPO are designed to eradicate Thaksin from Thai politics and/or having influence on policy at any level. I can't see any other threats to this government except Thaksin, politicians, police, and civil servants who are still loyal to the 'paymaster' in Dubai.

Just watched Nattawut's "Cow Jai Dtrong gan na" (We see things the same way) show. As usual, there were no threats, foul language or hate speech as claimed by many on here. I suggest you take the time to understand & watch otherwise your opinions are uninformed.

You can say about Nattawut what you want, but he ain't stupid and is really a gifted speaker who knows how to play an audience.

So one would expect the shows to suggest we see things the same way. You're for democracy, right? You're for justice, right? You're against elite who misuse the system to get rich, right? You want a voice, right? Well, let me be that voice rolleyes.gif

More importantly the Americans agree with you.

It's been shown to various UN members too.

It's neither inciting of hatreds or revolutionary in content.

The perception is that it is reporting truth.

And these days ( including here with some ""Slants on truth "" ) is threatening to the propaganda Machine.

Social media will be targeted next.

Basically the UN has been critical of these measures and previously warned the draconian Government on restrictions of media.

The pea brains here who think restricting freedom is jolly good are irrelevant people .....it's the international players that call the shots and impose sanctions.

I am pleased they shut it down.

Speeds the process.

I hope he carries out his threats and go much further so the International players get tough quicker.

June isn't too far off ....the Tier 3 should stick so that's some good news.

EU will hit them in late December with Sanctions after a negative ruling in October.

And between there and now watch this Government roll out more draconian measures and shoot themselves in the foot.

You had better believe that their attitude won't be tolerated and they are on the Thai -Tanic

Here's what the UN thinks about their article 44 and the way they do things.

GENEVA (Reuters) - The United Nations human rights chief said on Thursday that the Thai military government had replaced martial law "with something even more draconian" and called for a return to civilian rule.

Thailand's ruling junta said on Wednesday it had lifted the martial law imposed just before a coup 10 months ago. But it invoked a security clause in the interim constitution that will mean the military will retain broad powers.

U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein said the decision "leaves the door wide open to serious violations of fundamental human rights" and "annihilates freedom of expression".

The revision bestows "unlimited powers" on Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha "without any judicial oversight at all", Zeid said in a statement, noting that the junta had pledged a return to civilian rule after the coup last May.

The special security measure announced by the junta, known as Article 44, allows security forces to continue to make arrests without a court warrant and to detain people without charge.

"It explicitly gives these military peace and order maintenance officers the authority to prohibit the reporting of news or sale or distribution of books, publications, or any other medium that may create public fear or are intended to distort news

it would seem pretty obvious they will be attempting to put on a very clean face right now but make no mistake - this crowd are nothing short of a bought terrorist organisation funded by the evil criminal in Dubai. Youtube will be nice for them, they may get to see what people actually think of them with the comments they get.

They lost their support base when they were seen dancing with joy and cheering on stage at the news of children being blown to bits during a grenade attack at a market in Trat perpetrated by some of their members

No other threats other than the people of course - but then I forget, their views don't count in your fantasy fascist Disney land do they?

:)

BTW "More importantly the Americans agree with you. It's been shown to various UN members too."

To put things in perspective.

From 2015-03-05

"GENEVA — The United Nations’ rights chief on Thursday delivered a blunt critique of global powers, including the United States, in a report warning that many measures adopted by governments in the name of protecting national security violated human rights.

“The fight against terror is a struggle to uphold the values of democracy and human rights, not undermine them,” said Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein, the United Nations high commissioner for human rights, calling for counterterrorism strategies that addressed the causes of extremism.

In his report, Mr. al-Hussein had stern words for the United States, saying that findings by the Senate of torture by the C.I.A. showed that the country had at times “abandoned” its principles in the fight against terrorism."
