Johnny Depp's dogs face death in Australia

SYDNEY (AFP) - Johnny Depp's pet dogs Pistol and Boo face being put down unless they "bugger off" back to Hollywood after he brought them into Australia illegally on his private jet.

The actor, who is in the country to film "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales", was given the grim warning by Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce on Thursday.

"Just because he’s Johnny Depp does not mean he’s exempt from Australian law," Joyce told reporters.

Australia has strict animal quarantine laws to keep disease at bay, which Depp appears to have ignored, arriving in Brisbane last month with the Yorkshire terriers in tow without declaring them to customs.

"There is a process if you want to bring animals -- you get the permits, they go into quarantine and then you can have them," said Joyce, with customs authorities expected to seize the dogs imminently.

He said he became aware that Depp had the dogs with him after they were spotted being taken to a groomer.

"It’s time that Pistol and Boo buggered off back to the United States," added the minister. "He can send them back or we will have to euthanase them."

Asked if his tough stance may affect Depp’s view of him, Joyce replied: "I don’t think Mr Depp will be inviting me to the grand opening of the Pirates of the Caribbean."

Depp, who stars as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Disney franchise has been shooting on the Gold Coast tourist strip in Australia’s east.

"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" is the fifth instalment in the blockbuster series, which has raked in more than US$3.6 billion at the box office.

How on earth did the dogs get over the border and to a groomer?

They should have been held in AQIS facilities at the airport.

The minister should be looking into THAT!

Damn right! I had those AQIS pricks hold up 20Te of equipment because they found one bird feather in a tool box.

Private jet,

Celebrities and billionaires think laws don't apply to them. While it shouldn't happen, they often use their clout to bypass controls.

While his mutts are probably clean ,they could have bought rabies (and other nasties)into a country free of the disease,

Put them down and give Depp the bill.

You forgot your 'smiley' identifying that your post was sarcastic / not serious...

Simple solution here is to put the dogs through Quarantine, fine JD for breaking the law.

That's just too simple.

Everybody benefits from this.

There is no such thing as bad publicity.

The rabid minister might want to be careful here cause River Phoenix died at Johnny Depp's Viper Room nightclub in W Hollywood, Halloween 1993.

What's the old saying....you like my dog, you like me.

Double on this one.

I somehow don't think Johnny Depp has rabid dogs but Australia might want instead to consider the health and temperament of its dog and deforestation minister.

There is no excuse. Most every half smart traveler knows Australian Quarantine laws are very strict and apply to everyone as does the Indonesian laws regarding drugs.

Depp was just being full of himself. The solution is simple, get his pilots out of holiday mode and fly the muts home. Hopefully they will be placed into 6 months of quarantine when they lob back into the USA or where ever he resides.

Hope Depp shows them where they can go....

If the self centred yank wants to bare his naked rear end at Australia, Australians and the law then he should cop the full penalty for his action which is imprisonment for bringing unauthorised animals into the country. Cancel his visa and deport this arrogant yank. This do you realise who I am, I'm a god damn American and we are untouchable attitude doesn't wash with Australians so he can bugger off.

Illegal immigrant mutts.

Queue jumpers bringing their foreign poodle ways to our great shores.

Probably ripe for radicalisation too with lone woof attacks.

Nauru or bust I say!

So let's see. A Hollywood production company pumps tens of millions of dollars into the economy shooting their 5th (4th??, I don't know) sequel in Oz. And because you don't like Yanks who don't fly commercial, you'd have them kill 2 innocent dogs (the size of a bunny) belonging to the actor who is the key to the multi-billion dollar franchise, and whose contract could probably have them filming their next move in any country he chooses.

That's wrong on so many levels... Methinks the minister would be looking for a new job about 5 minutes after it happened. Just on economic grounds. In fact, given the publicity, I suggest he dust off his CV anyway.

why, because he is American? What right does he have to be afforded special treatment over others. Being American doesn't give him immunity from prosecution in Australia, Americans even tho they believe they are, aren't a superior race and don't have the right to spit on Australia and her laws. The law says animals can be exterminated if smuggled into Australia and the smugglers can get a prison sentence. Depp has been treated very softly and given time to send them back and he is now down to about 30 hours before they will be seized and put down. The laws in relation to smuggling animals into Australia are there for a very good reason.

Just on economics, the minister, the agrarian socialist that he is, is on the money.

Biosecurity breaches can cost the farming community multiples of what this movie will even make for oz.

And given it is being made in oz it no doubt is getting some sort of tax break or grant so to be honest, he can take his dogs and shove them - on economic grounds of course.

Methinks you think wrong.

The law is quite clear regarding bringing animals into Australia - it can be done with the appropriate quarantine controls - usually six months in quarantine ofr a dog or cat.

Sounds harsh? Australia is a relatively clean country with a very large agricultural industry and has an excellent reputation. it doesn't need to run the risk, however small of sullying that reputation.

The minister has said the right thing, maybe not in Oxford English granted.

I think most Aussies would agree with his sentiment. There have been a few ecological disasters in the past...rabbits and cane toads....never want that repeated.

Put the mutts back on the jet and fly them back to the USA.
