NRC whip denies reports on attempts to overthrow draft charter

BANGKOK, 24 May 2015 (NNT) - The National Reform Council whip has denied reports that there have been attempts to overthrow the draft of the new Constitution.

Secretary-General of the NRC whip Alongkorn Polabutr said that the reports which claim the reform council is planning to cancel the draft charter is groundless and affirmed that there has not been anyone to give any order to the council.

Mr. Alongkorn stated that all members of the NRC are independent in carrying out their duties while assuring that all “Five Rivers” which include the reform council, the National Legislative Assembly, the Constitution Drafting Committee, the Cabinet, the National Council for Peace and Order, have been working in accordance with the responsibilities placed upon them in such a way that no one can interfere with or give them orders.

However, Mr. Alongkorn said that it is also too early to conclude that the draft charter will be approved or not.

Concerning the Cabinet’s reported plan to amend the interim Constitution to extend the time to review the draft charter from 60 days to 90 days, he said that, if true, the NRC’s vote to accept or reject the draft will be postponed from August 6 to September 6, instead.
