Govt closes Nepal donation program

BANGKOK, 30 May 2015 (NNT) – The government has announced its plan to close its donation program for quake victims in Nepal following the Nepalese government's plan to collect customs duty on all incoming international items.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the cabinet will allow related agencies to collect donation money until May 31, whereas reception of relief items has already ended since May 28.

The closure of the donation program for Nepal came after a report that the Nepalese government on May 27 started to levy customs duty at a rate between 5 and 30 percent on all foreign products brought into its territory, including relief items from the international community. In addition to customs duty, foreign nations are required to pay a value-added tax (VAT) of 13 percent.

The cabinet has also allowed provincial disaster prevention and mitigation offices nationwide to put remaining donated items up for sale at their own discretion. Incomes from the sales will be transferred to charity projects for the Nepalese. Donated items which remain unsold will be used to help people affected by disaster within the country.

PM reiterates Thailand’s commitment to assist displaced migrants

BANGKOK, 30 May 2015 (NNT) - Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has reassured that Thailand will provide humanitarian aid to migrants at sea in accordance with international standards.

During his national televised address on “Return Happiness to the People” program, the Thai Premier said the government has made its stance clear that it will provide humanitarian assistance to the Rohingya minority stranded at sea while urging all countries as well as international organizations to join the efforts in tackling the root cause of such irregular migration.

For these migrants, Thailand is only a transit country, he said, not their destination, adding that the Operation Center for Patrol and Humanitarian Assistance to Irregular Migrants in the Indian Ocean (OCPHAM) has been established. The center serves as a floating platform that 1) provides medical treatments, food and water, 2) investigates the possibility of human trafficking activities, and 3) identifies and prepares for possible solutions.

Lastly, Gen Prayut said Thai people are kind-hearted and have always been helpful to others despite the size of their country. Thailand was one of the very first nations to send help to Nepal when it was struck by a 7.9 magnitude earthquake.
