Phuket flash floods hit Patong

Kathu Police station again succumbed to flooding in Patong.

PHUKET: A heavy downpour caused minor flash floods in Patong this afternoon (May 30), with floodwaters reaching up to 50 centimetres in some areas.

A deluge at about 1pm caused roads to be overrun with water, leaving motorists stranded or cut off temporarily as the drains failed to carry away the runoff from inside the west-coast resort town.

The rising floodwaters were compounded by runoff from the Nakerd hills that encircle the east side of Patong.

Kathu Police station again suffered flooding, with the car park inundated. In August last year, the station suffered minor flood damage several times as heavy rains fell upon the town. (see story here.)

The Phuket News has been informed that the major roads in Patong are now clearing as the waters subside, and traffic is beginning to flow normally throughout the town.

The Southwest Meteorological Centre in Phuket forecasts more thundershowers this week, with a warning that more minor flash floods may occur.

Really - I was in Patong at 13.00 and I never saw any rain at all. For sure black clouds, but no actually rain. Must have been very localised, I was on Nanai Road.

Where were you at 12:38 when I took this photo? This was from Hasip Pee road:

Impossible, this just cannot be happening............... well not since the new Middle Road was dug up several times over three years to lay new drains to stop the flooding; nearby klongs were dredged and widened and just last year it was publicly stated that the drainage problem near the police station was fixed and it would flood no more!!! Yeah right!

Well that's what you get when mega projects are built on the hillside and the land is cleared for them....... this has been getting worse over the years and it has been plain for all to see, apart from the developers and officials, who are only interested in seeing what is inside brown envelopes.

I hate to think what this coming rainy season is going to be like for those of us who inhabit Nanai Road and its surrounds.

Where I live there was bad flooding every year, so they dug a huge open drain to take the stormwater and lined it with readymix applied by a bunch of labourers that knew nothing about concrete. Since then they have never cleaned the drain so it is getting full of mud. It is a race between the concrete walls collapsing or the drain being so blocked it doesn't work. TiT.

The Main Roads are fine but Nanai Road is a disaster.

As usual all the dirty, Sand and Gravel from most Building sites on the

Mountain gets washed down and ends up on the Road. If the Municipality

would charge the Builders for cleaning, this would stop soon.

Also now another Thai special is on again, instead of removing the Sand from

the Roads and then flashing the Roads, everything get's washed into the Drainage by

our specialist lazy workers with the Water Trucks. ( Firetrucks )!!!

We simply will increase Taxes to get everything cleaned seems to be the idea behind it.

Yes, even yesterday after a small rain in Patong, sand, gravel water across Nanai. It's going to be a real mess as soon as a big rain hits.
