Escap executive praises HM the King's sufficiency economy philosophy
THE SUNDAY NATION

BANGKOK: -- HIS MAJESTY the King's sufficiency economy philosophy has been praised by the head of the United Nations' Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (Escap) for providing a key guideline for global sustainable development.

Shamshad Akhtar, under secretary-general of the UN and executive secretary of Escap, said that after she took up the Escap position in Thailand she found the King's philosophy to be extraordinary, as it gave importance to balanced development while also promoting people's potential.

It was a valuable guideline for sustainable development, which was the world's current and future agenda, she said.

"The King's sufficiency economy philosophy was implemented widely throughout the country and also applied in many other countries. It gives importance to development with a balance between economic, social and environment dimensions, which is in line with the direction towards the world's sustainable development," she said.

Thai organisations that have successfully applied the philosophy for rural development include the Royal Initiative Discovery Foundation's co-operations with communities to tackle water and soil issues and the Mae Fah Luang Foundation Under Royal Patronage's project against the opium trade and to develop rural areas, she said.

Akhtar's comments were made during the 71st session of Escap in Bangkok on Friday, which was attended by 51 |countries.

The event promoted the theme "Balancing the three dimensions of sustainable development: from integration to implementation".
