Kerryd
More likely an old 105mm artillery shell. They fired projectiles in the 12-15kg range (depending on shell type). You can still see the driving band at the base of the shell, which is "squared off". Mortar shells taper to a slender fin assembly at the base. 105mm Artillery shells: 120mm Mortar shells: Here's a pic of a 105mm artillery shell gound in a Phuket construction site just over a year ago:

FangFerang
UXD, unexploded ordinance kills many, too many people in Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. In fifty years, the revenue and effort from the countries responsible is underwhelmingly insignificant. Mines, bomblets and ordnance are still killing children and farmers... Maybe we should clean up after ourselves, NATO???

northernphil
At least it was a P.street collector that found it . Think of the headline if a jetski operator had found it. " Shell found on beach "

Basil B
Certainly not a mortar, could be a RTN practise round fished up by a fisherman, some of the Islands have been used as target practice by the Navy and Air Force and the seas around them are littered with spent ordnance, thankfully most have blue bands on them, may be a translation issue, it is filled with mortar (cement). PETERTHEEATER
Luckily a nearby street vendor offered the use if her recently calibrated weighing scale to confirm the weight of the projectile.......
