BANGKOK: -- Community leaders have shown their support for the government's crackdown on illegal fishing and are confident the European Union yellow card against fishing industry for widespread illegal fishing will be withdrawn within six-month deadline given by the EU, a survey released Monday found.

Master Poll by the Thai Researchers in Community Happiness Association (TRICHA) conducted the survey on 1,079 community leaders from July 3-5 to get their opinions on the yellow card and anxiety about a shortage of seafood due to most trawler owners suspending operations because they don't comply with new regulations aimed at getting the yellow card lifted.

The regulations came into force last Wednesday.

Chet Ratchadaphannathikul, the president of TRICHA, revealed that 91.2 per cent of the respondents saw the crackdown as a benefit as it would lead to the removal of yellow card, restore the country's image, improve the environment and reduce human trafficking.

Another 8.8 per cent viewed the move as a drawback because it caused seafood prices to rise and fishermen to lose money, which could lead to conflict.

While the vast majority believed the crackdown would end positively, 61 per cent were still worried about this matter, while 38.9 per cent believed it would have a short-term effect and the situation would return to normal soon.

More than half, or 59.1 per cent, of the community leaders were confident that the EU would lift the yellow card within the six-month deadline due to the effectiveness of the government in dealing with the problem, but 12.1 per cent had a lack of confidence as they believed the matter was too complicated to be solved in such a short period.

Two-thirds of respondents, or 74.7 per cent, did not want the measures on illegal trawlers eased.

Just over half the respondents regarded the suspension of illegal trawlers as good for the government's image but 40.2 per cent disagreed with that sentiment.

The European Commission handed Thailand the yellow card in April, giving the government six months to implement a corrective tailor-made action plan.

Should the situation not improve, the EU could resort to banning fishery imports from Thailand.

If the fishing practice is Illegal , why would community leaders be against a crackdown , leaders in the community have no option than to support legal law abiding activities , one would find it bizarre if community leaders didn't support legal options . coffee1.gif

The subject matter aside - regarding fishing industry stuff...I was actually drawn to this Polling source:

Master Poll by the Thai Researchers in Community Happiness Association (TRICHA)

Huh?

An official title with even an abbreviation - (TRICHA)

A well respected, long standing Polling firm...right?

Now there is a "Community Happiness Association?....Who knew!............ I wonder who the President is, and who the members are?

And conveniently supporting the Govts. issue with the fishing industry......details of which I am not familiar or concerned with in this Post.

My point is, that here we have another of the anti-democrat's modus-operandi. Using a so-called public opinion Poll to provide a phony public opinion veneer supporting themselves. In some ways it is a swipe at one's intelligence. They arrogantly think that every one else is so dense and don't see through this smoke, and they are so clever...... They do this all the time with the likes of NIDA, Dusit and other major Polls characterized as being unaffiliated, yet always providing faux Public Opinion support for whatever their issue is at any given time.

Somebody called that "Agenda laundering"

The scary thing, is that not only is this an example of the Anti-democrats segmenting themselves into seemingly independent groupings such as this.......They are also floating the notion of giving these groups political clout in their constitution.....Their convenient way of separating governance from the electorate.

No doubt that the illegal fishing crackdown is a good government move but the lack of a comprehensive plan to contain the fallouts tampered my praise. There is a total absent of any plans to prevent raising prices. Dear leader plan was to tell the people who can't afford fish to eat chicken. What about fast tracking registration. Nothing there or providing alternative employment and soft loans for those businesses that are affected. Zilch, nothing. Just leave all that to fact like our democracy.
