What does it mean? ''Gateway Timeout: can't connect to remote host''

I read a news website smh dot com dot au nearly everday and they allow you to read a certain number of articles and then want you to subscribe. I then clear browser history and start again.

Ive been doing this for a year and lately whenever I type in the url I get the message ''

Gateway Timeout: can't connect to remote host''

Ive tried downloading firefox and using that instead of chrome but it doesnt work. I test the connection of my LAN and can open thaivisa straight away and thus know that I dont have a problem connecting to the internet.

Thus, my question is... can the techie boys at the sydney morning herald block my IP address i.e. prevent me from accessing their site?

Its annoying as I would like to continue using the website for free. I dont believe in paying for reading a news website from the nanny state of australia

thanks

Doesn't really if you don't believe in paying if they do believe in charging.

But no, clearing your cookies to get more than your allowed free reads is nothing to do with gateway timeout.

Are you running a proxy or a VPN?

I can connect without a problem (ToT).

It really sounds more like a technical/network problem.

Might be a DNS problem.

You can try this:

open command prompt (cmd)

enter:

ipconfig /flushdns

When you opened the command prompt, also try a ping to the site:

ping www.smh.com.au

or

ping 203.153.50.234

This is the address that I get for www.smh.com.au.

Also a traceroute can help to find the problem:

tracert 203.153.50.234

Blocking a private dynamic IP address for such purpose would be quite strange and somewhat useless.

It means the ThaiVisa web server is broken (along with a few others).

Probably because the Thai security services are having a bit of a go at the internet.

Ctrl +F5 can force the page to show.

??? Thaivisa

The poster has a problem with this Australian news site (Sydney Morning Herald) if I understand correctly.

I open it from time to time when it appears in Google news for "Thailand".

----

Just noticed that this site (address) content is distributed by Akamai.

Very surprising results for ping/tracert.

Times below 20 ms, which means content is cached in Thailand.

When you clean your browser history are you also clearing your SMH cookies?

Depends what options you tick

// Edit //

It isn't clear if you are asking a question, or responding to and asking a question of the OP.
