My boyfriend used this word (peon sa nid ) referring to a "close friend" who is a woman while emailing another friend. What does this mean in English?

So close friend as in close plutonic friend or close love interest?

It doesn't say.

The phrase is ambiguous, it can refer either to a close friend or an 'intimate' friend. Usually no love connection intended though.

Sorry I disagree.

It only means close friend and not lover. lover or intimate friend is "con rak"

Girls say it when talking about their male friends that they are having relations with because they do not want anyone to know that they are an item. Sometimes it is said as a joke but the meaning is never intimate friend. Even when said as a joke the outcome is that they want the other person to believe or feel that they are just close friends.

For what it's worth, Edward's explanation is exactly in line with the explanation I was given by a Thai teacher at AUA when discussing this word.

I am not saying that it is not used to imply that 2 people are intimate I am just saying that the literal translation means close friend.

To me it is just liike saying we are just friends with a smile in English..
