PHUKET: -- Two men were rushed to hospital after a Phuket cement truck slammed head-on into pickup truck in Cherng Talay this afternoon (July20).

Police and rescue workers were called to the scene, in front of a Super Cheap convenience store on Srisoonthorn Rd in Bang Tao, at 2pm.

Two men were pinned inside the crushed pickup truck, forcing rescue workers to use steel cutters to recover them from the wreck.

Both men were taken to Thalang Hospital. Police have yet to confirm the men’s condition.

The front-right wheel on the cement truck had been ripped free by the force of the impact.

The cement truck driver, Nipon Phumiprathet, 31, told police that the pickup truck “lost control and crashed into his truck”.

Police took Mr Nipon’s statement before he was taken to Thalang Hospital for chest pain.

One bystander at the scene told The Phuket News, “It looked like one swerved to avoid the collision because the other was trying to overtake [another vehicle].”

Police have yet to charge either of the drivers over the incident, confirmed Lt Peerasit Noopayan of the Cherng Talay police.

“We will question the two men from the pickup truck at the hospital,” he said.

Cement trucks seem to be the cause of a lot of accidents and deaths in this country.

I was just speaking with someone I met the other day and he said a few years ago his GF, who was pregnant, just went out on the motorbike for something at 7/11 and a cement truck pulled out in front of them and killed them both. Very sad story.

So the pickup slammed into the cement truck and yet look where the cement truck is.

Huh ? Looks to me that the cement truck is on the correct side of the road and probably it was the pick-up doing the normal reckless overtaking manoeuvre .

But, no Thai would ever do that.

It should be part of driver education here that if there is something bigger than you, it is in the correct lane, don't play a game of chicken with it.

What are the odds that the pick-up driver flashed his headlights mere moments before contact?

I past this crash yesterday. The cement truck is in the correct lane, and if fact looks like it may have tried to swerve left when the pickup smashed into it. Not much left of the pickup. I'm surprised anyone in it survived.

yep and the road was wet by the looks of it. pick-up must have been going a fair old speed to rip the wheel off a lorry, as previous posters said, it looks like the cement lorry has done no wrong here.

Speeding pick-up with an idiot Super-Thai behind the wheel crosses a solid yellow line, in the wet, and goes into the front of a cement truck.

Perhaps he had the wrong amulet hanging off the mirror or he forgot to remove the seatbelts for good luck.

Usual thing. An inherently unstable pickup truck being driven to fast on a wet road. Pickups are for business and need good loads in the back to help stabilise them. However much Manufacturers try to tart them up as sports vehicles they remain as of very old technology with live rear axles and leaf springs; no match for modern front wheel drive vehicles. The only real advantage for pickup vehicles is the under body sold steel chassis.

The Thai Government needs to set a level playing field by increasing the VAT on Pickup trucks to discourage their use by private individuals. It would not increase the costs to Companies who could reclaim the VAT through their business accounting.
