I searched for this topic but did not find a thread specifically about USA which is my home country

My passport expire April 1, 2016. I plan to enter Malaysia before October 1, 2016 which should be within the 6 months validity period.

And I plan to return to USA later in October or November, will I have a problem with the validity of less than 6 months getting back to USA?

No requirement for any remaining period of validity entering your home country.

Some of the software for airline tickets will refuse you, so you may need to buy your ticket from a travel agent ----- assuming you are going by air.

If driving you should be okay. It would be helpful if you have the return leg of your ticket to USA with you, so you can show anybody who objects. This whole 6 month thing is barmy anyway, it makes no sense. A passport is valid until it expires.
