First off, thank you to all the good comments. My intent was to show a realistic view of what happened in my case and no one else.

In any forum, no matter what, there will always be those (that have such a great life in Thailand that they have all this time for bitching and complaining about something that has nothing to do with them)

I liked the comments about showing off when I simply took a factual picture of my house, which is average standard at best, so people living in Thailand could use it for comparison.

Someone was bitching about 3 cars, when another poster has a Lexus that cost more than the 3 of mine combined. I also wrote that I restored 2 of those cars as they are both over 20 years old and bought the pair for less than US $5k

But is not the details, it is the fact so many people have such a brilliant life in Thailand, but every single thing they comment on is a bitch about something or someone.

One guy posted he would not post a photo of his wife because everyone would be leering at her? What the hell? You must be one insecure dude if you are worrying about people looking at a photo on the internet.

I think when people are so negative then turn around and tell everyone how brilliant their life in Thailand is, something is out of whack and they are kidding themselves.

Anyone that is truthful enough to share a story and back it up with facts, it should be left as is whether you like it or not because quite simply is is not you and has nothing to do with you.

The people that want the information will welcome it, the people that do not, should disregard it.

When all you negative commentators, who have a history of always posting negative comments, start sharing your happy life with evidence, I will gladly believe you.

Until then, rest on your corporations, investments, riches, and everything else you claim to have making you so happy that you have to write negative comments.

I have never met a happy person that has everything, be so negative about something that has nothing to do with them.

The only logical answer is they are trapped in their own stories and are probably not really happy at all.

Talk is cheap, happy people do not sit around posting nothing but negative comments.

If you have a happy rich life in Thailand, share it with everyone instead of wasting time posting negative comments.

Ron the Pig Farmer did such a post and a link to his website. He is happy with what he has, which for him is his kingdom and I salute him for sharing his story.

If you have nothing to do but post negative comments, I suspect you are full of yourself and don't really have a happy life to share.

Take a long look in the mirror and worry about yourself before you waste your precious happy time in Thailand railing on mine.

Thanks for the pictures of your house. Personally I think your decore choices are just plain ugly. Why have a beach house and decorate it like a cheap innercity motel with pastels and wall prints. And the blame for that lies soley on you becaue you decorated while you waited for you wife to arrive...right?

A friend of mine has just moved into a property down the road from me here in Thailand, I put him on to the place. His wife is currently overseas (working) but will arrive here in about 3 months. Other than a mattress and some bare basic kitchen ware he has not purchased a single piece of furniture because (in his words) he wants to wait for his wife to arrive so that she can share in the decorating decisions. Where in your new house has your wife been able to express her personality, tastes and choices? At the risk of being rude was the arrival of your wife state side the final decoration to add to YOUR house?

Unlike some members, I do not care what your age is. If you have a working relationship good for you. Say hi to your mum for me and give her my love. I lost mine to breast cancer when I was just 15 and she was my sole care provider. I would give everything I am and everything I own just to sit at table with her and have a cup of tea.

You have stated that your two fixer up cars cost less than 5K USD. I know that is the truth and hilarious when you compare what cars cost in Thailand. But I am very interested in what you paid for your house. If it is not too personal a question I would love to know so that I can compare it with housing both in Thailand and other countries with which I am familiar.

Good luck and best wishes with your new life. And don't forget to ponder a while upon my comments about including your wife in decorating decisions moving forward.

Since he mentioned many Thai restaurants I would assume Broward county/ Ft Lauderdale

Rent comparison between a like ocean city in Thailand - Rayong is

Apartment (3 bedrooms) Outside of Centre 17,833.33 ฿

Ft Lauderdale (511.25 $) 58,318.34 ฿
(1,671.88 $) +227.02 %
Not too bad the States is only 227% more.

if you had no money, your wife would be back to Isaan without hesitation. I could write same story in UK, Germany, Australia... living in a country where people shoot and kill at each over in movie theatre is not what I can call a good country.

I never liked the USA with their car everywhere and people are too materialist. the US food is just too boring and US farangs are the dumbest in the world. I stay in Thailand.(no US bashing, just the reality)

Judging from your name, I suspect the reason you don't like Americans is because they didn't roll out the red carpet for you and bow at your feet.

In America, you get respect from people by acheiving success through hard work. They don't care for people who are lazy ass wannabee aristocrats with their old world thinking.

Oh and yeah Americans farangs the dumbest in the world.....so dumb they invented the automobile, airplane, film camera, electricity, tv, the internet etc, and have won only 350 Nobel Prizes over it's history. But who's counting.

Good luck in thailand. America doesn't need anymore losers.

You will not post slurs, degrading or overly negative comments directed towards ...... any other group on the basis of race, nationality,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Now see, I would have thought that writing "US farangs are the dumbest in the world" was an overly negative comment.

But since you tell me it is not US bashing I guess it's OK.

Anyone can have a good life, or bad, in pretty much most parts of the world, depending on how they approach things. I live in Thailand. I have a few houses (30/30 leases on the land beneath them). I have no mortgages. My wife (me, too, if you want to view it that way) has five rai out in the countryside, all completely paid for.I have a pretty newish truck, for which I paid cash.Same for my "big bike" - I paid cash. In fact, I have an income, with no debt at all. Unlike you, I have no job. And so I have no boss, and no morning commute. And I have time to at least look at threads on ThaiVisa if I want... If they look at all interesting to me. When I get bored with that, maybe I go scuba diving, or touring on the motorcycle. I have the time for whatever. Oh, and trust me when I say that your wife, lovely as she may be, is no more lovely than my own. And I don't need to post photos of any of all that on ThaiVisa. Why? Because it's really none of the business of anyone here, and I don't have to prove a thing to anyone.

Your definition of "a good life" probably is closer to meaning "an easy life". In the developed world, a good life is generally taken to mean that you have the resources available to you to be able to pursue your interests in a way to utilize your skills to the maximum utility. If you think the 3rd world allows you to do that, well good for you. I think people like Elon Musk and the other naturalized Americans that helped to develop Google and Facebook and Ebay probably have a different opinion.

Does Thailand have problems, political or otherwise? Of course it does. Just like most any other country. But I haven't seen too many burnt churches around Thailand. Not too many mass shootings here, either (203 mass shootings in the USA this year, as of 7/20/2015: http://shootingtracker.com/wiki/Mass_Shootings_in_2015). The levels of political corruption in the western world, and especially the states, tend to suggest that the governments of the west are in no way superior to the governments of SE Asia.

This anti gun hysteria is strange. Become a regular reader of Thai Rath or Daily News papers and you will suddenly learn how many "mass shootings" thailand - which is not much bigger than the state of California - has.
And seriously you think governments of SE Asia are better than western governments on what measurements exactly?

My sole "criticism" of your original post was to congratulate you on reinserting yourself into the matrix. For me -- and I speak for no one else in this thread -- the west is "the matrix." It comes with a level of unreality that leaves me constantly shaking my head in disbelief. Your photos and words demonstrate, again, to me only, that you are committed to this path. To a belief in the matrix, and to having a lovely life there. And I do indeed say "good on ya," if that's what you want! Sincerely! Me? Just as the characters in the movie were happier in the beat up world of their city of Zion, I'd rather live in Thailand, or Haiti, or Botswana, or most anywhere in which the world makes sense at the most fundamental levels. I'd rather be a divemaster living in a shack in Khao Lak with a wife and 3-4 kids living on $1,000US per month, than plugged in back in the USA, making $5,000 per month, with the mortgage, commute, car payments, etc, etc., etc.

The matrix? Um, yeah, no one is questioning your sanity.

However, outside of your matrix world, the American government does not force anyone to take out mortgages. People have choices. Trying to blaming the government "matrix" for your own failings is strange. Suggesting you have less freedoms in America than in Thailand, is even crazier. But, if you think it's better to choose living in a shack with 3-4 kids going to a public school in Thailand, or Haiti or Botswana then good luck.

Congratulations to the OP. I did the same thing as him as well.

Questions about cost have been raised. For those who aren't Americans this might be of interest. I found a typical, two year old American home just outside of Jacksonville Florida for 5 million baht. IMHO the land under it is worth (to me) 1/2 of the price. This is no money at all to an engineer in the US. If he started with no money he could easily pay it off in less than 5 years.

That land with title insurance and a government to back it up to perpetuity is what it's all about. He didn't need anyone's permission to move there and outright own his home. He has a right to be there - something he'd never find in LOS.

This home has the typical American amenities and surrounding infrastructure and proper engineering, permits and inspections on all. Note that from the air and to the left of the picture are large ponds that would have been swamps that I really like rather than having houses crowded right up. That's all engineered into the subdivision and of no concern.

they invented fatca and fbar and irs and nsa.... and Obamacare :)

and are at the same level with Iran and Saudi with execution and they have over 2 millions jail mates and a debt of 18t with 60t derivatives.

I still persist and sign, USA is the dumbest country in the world. no bashing here. just fact . Google it. plenty of Web pages. http://nypost.com/2013/10/08/us-adults-are-dumber-than-the-average-human/

I know people don't like the truth about the #0 country, but believe it or not, people who can, are now leaving the USA at the speed of light.

btw Internet came after the Minitel, the French internet . and many countries came with inventions too.

The internet was invented in the US.

So was your computer, smartphone, TV... The US owns modern technology. You must have missed noticing how many people are trying to move to the US even illegally for opportunity, but you don't hear of many wanting to trade even for Thailand. It's not common to see too many American expats.

Mexico doesn't have much of a problem with Americans trying to sneak in, LOL. thumbsup.gif

Thanks Neversure for the price comparison. Hopefully the OP will be along shortly to let us know what he paid.

In my hometown back in Australia, which is a similar beachside hamlet, the equivalent of 150K USD is just short of enough to buy a demountable home in a van park. 1 bedroom apartments start at about 300K AUD circa 230K USD. We have annual land rates (tax) also which on the average family home run at about 4 to 5K AUD per year. So, by all measures, having a house like the OPs is very affordable to buy. What is the percentage nut on a mortgage in the states at the moment? 4%? So even if the OP borrowed 100% his payments would only be circa 500USD per month. Or 125 USD per week. A shared dorm room in a backpackers in Australia costs more than that.

house in the USA are in wood, this is why it' s cheap.

they are unsafe, one tornado or hurricane and everything is gone.

even the shitty room at 2000 bahts in Thailand is safer than the Pentagon :)

You really sound like a fool to have stayed here all those years. I mean , you have " an advanced degree" , you bought your wife a car, oh yes and you just happened to buy a house too. I'm an economic refugee here.I would much rather be able to afford to rent a decent little studio apartment in my own country, my own state of California , but I cannot afford to. And I have no hope of finding a job that would pay enough to survive there. I'm 60 and I'll probably die here.

Um, no. But she was in fact a registered nurse which is how she met my dad when he came back home after spending 3 and a half years in Japanese prison camps.

You're spot on about the payment. About 4% today. At my link, under the picture where it says "Payment Options" it verifies that. A 15 year loan is at 3.3% with a $850 payment. With his income, starting with nothing, he could pay it off in 5 years at about $2,500 per month if he wanted and still have plenty to live in.

I remind that most else is cheaper than LOS. Consumer goods such as cars, appliances, clothes and all are cheaper.

There are a lot of reasons that I live in the US and travel. There's a feeling of security in owning my land, having health insurance sorted for life, and having sane drivers and the rule of law.

Cheers

I'm wondering who the fool is. As much as we don't like Californians moving to live in our states, the law still does allow you to relocate somewhere cheaper. Out of 50 states, I'd guess 47 of them are much cheaper places to live than california.

I applaud the OP's post. It's refreshing to read a positive outcome on here after all the depressing dribble that's become the norm. Having recently gone thru the painful lengthy immigration process to get my wife from Phuket here...I understand his experience. He has valid points and reasonable advice. Not sure why we need to see pictures of the house though. His success was made plenty clear verbally. That being said I wish him and his family continued good luck.

kind of off the subject a little but...

I recently got a new camera. it puts a copywrite watermark on all my pics. takes a password to remove it...whistling.gif

We live in Florida about 1600 feet from the beach so it is very nice. In fact, it is allot like Thailand with coconut and palm trees, without all the heat (summer about 95F max).

Er, it's about 95 F here most of the time, mate, in case you hadn't noticed in your 10 years here ...

Anyway, I think I've crossed swords with the OP before. I remember there was a guy quite some years ago who couldn't get the difference between 'a lot' (have many things') and 'allot'. (give or apportion (something) to someone as a share or task.)

As a English teacher I took the person to task about it and he fudged the issue 'a lot' (sic) and continued to use it. If I recall, it was some website where the writer was asking people to write about their experiences of living in Thailand and in SE Asia - unpaid, of course ....

Then this 'allot' started cropping up on many other Thai-directed-to-foreigner websites. I challenged him that he was the first person, and really, I do believe it is the OP (who has become very quiet). The same brash, loud style, the same 'look-at-me' attitude ...

I may be wrong, but unless US schools are teaching spelling very badly, I do suspect I'm right ... 'allot' (sic)

As 'an' English teacher you should know better than to describe yourself as 'a' English teacher.... ;-)

Oh dear TT, you really do need to dig out your history books don't you!

Sorry to burst your little bubble of American self importance, but I'm afraid you didn't invent either the automobile or the airplane, and tv is also quite debatable as there were several nationalities all working on it at around the same time. As far as electricity goes nobody actually invented that... It is a natural phenomena, first described as 'electricity' by an English scientist William Gilbert in the 1600's.

We know Americans like to brag and boast - as evidenced by the OP, but please do at least try to stick to facts... You'll be telling us next that it was an American who invented planet Earth.

An excellent example of the type of inexpensive housing in a desirable area available in the US.

Similarly, I recently sold a 10 year old home a couple of hundred miles south of there, 7 miles from resort area and the beach. Over 200 square meters of air-conditioned space, 1/2 rai of land, 4 bedrooms, 2 car garage, swimming pool and a houseful of rosewood and teak furniture. Price: 4.5 million thai baht - not even half the cost of my home in Thailand.

Pretty much the same old thing with the same old people pretending to work for or against the American chamber of commerce. Someone will come along and pin them down and the results are always the same. Housing and the related expenses are much cheaper in Thailand and so is public transportation and sex.

The folks who can't figure out how to live in American, bash the Americans and the Americans who can't figure out how to live in Thailand bash the Americans who have figured out how to live in Thailand.

It is the expat pyramid of satisfaction of wants. A bit like Maslow's. Happy is living in Thailand with good sex and good insurance and French food.

The rest of you guys who have not figured out how to get happy continue on buying lonely homes with lonely cars and a permit to carry because you are afraid of your shadow.

The only Thai women who like living outside of Thailand are the ones living outside of Thailand. You might have to think about that for a while.

Take a Thai women outside of Thailand and you have a one in ten chance of her staying. (based on Thai Visa postings). And remember that the guys jump off roof tops in Thailand not because they can't go home to America or wherever- they jump because they can't stay in Thailand. biggrin.png

No offense to the op but your story is a "teensy" bit masturbatory. Dropping your education, status, doctor mom, etc. No different than when Tim "sharky" Ward poses with pics of his Lambo and gold chains--just doing it your way.

I get it: people need to document their awesomeness and even more importantly--make other people know it too. No matter what--Id take an Isaan shack over the "redneck riviera" any day. I'd also rather read about how well off folks kept the dream going til their dying day instead of going to the retirement Hell of Florida (my dad lives there and I know it well).

Other than that--"cool story bro"

Good luck to you sir. Your wife is cute.
