Don't know how this would work for non-U.S. libraries, but it sure works for me.

Ah, it does work, I just did a Google for: uk libraries online borrow books

Try substituting your country for "UK" in the search line.

Neato!! And, cheap, as in Free. Just need a library card, or borrow someone's card number and PIN.

I bought a Kindle Fire last December, took a while to get used to it but works fine now. Can also download a Kindle App and just use it on a tablet.

More than 11,000 libraries in the United States offer Public Library Books for Kindle. You can check out Kindle books through the website of your local library and have them sent directly to your Fire tablet, Kindle device, or Kindle reading app.

Kindle books that you borrow from a public library are available to you for a specific period of time, just like with physical library books. Public library books for Kindle are available at libraries throughout the United States. These books are offered through a digital service called OverDrive.

Note: Public Library books for Kindle are available in the Kindle format (.azw) only.

  2. Get a library card and a PIN from your local library.
  3. Go to the website of your local public library and search for Kindle books / eBooks.
  4. At checkout, sign in to your Amazon account, and select the Fire tablet, Kindle device, or Kindle reading app to send the book to.
  5. Connect your device to Wi-Fi and download the title from the Archived Items or Cloud.

Restrictions:

  • Availability of books and length of loan will vary by library.
  • Public library books require an active Wi-Fi connection for delivering books to a Kindle e-reader. Library books cannot be delivered via your Kindle's 3G connection.
  • Due to publisher restrictions, some titles may not be wirelessly delivered and require USB transfer from your computer to your device. These restricted titles also may not be accessed on Kindle reading apps.

Return a Library Book

To return a library book before the loan period ends, visit Manage Your Content and Devices.

Since the length of a book loan is determined by the library, check with your public library to find out when to return a borrowed book. You'll receive a courtesy reminder e-mail from Amazon three days before the book is due and another e-mail when the loan period has ended.

To return a library book:

  1. Go to Manage Your Content and Devices.
  2. From Your Content, select the Actions button next to the book that you want to return.
  3. Select Return This Book, and then select Yes in the pop-up window.

You will no longer have access to the book from your device after it's been returned. However, you can always access your saved notes and highlights through Manage Your Content and Devices even after the book has been returned. If you check out the book again, or purchase it from Amazon, your notes and highlights will appear in the book.

Great advice! I use Overdrive to listen to audio books from a US library on my smart phone all the time. Also, there are a lot of free audio books, educational courses, and such available online for free if you don't have access to a US library. For example: http://www.openculture.com/
