Vocational schools ease tattoo plan

BANGKOK: -- PRIVATE vocational schools have now agreed to consider applications from students who sport tattoos and stretched ear piercing on a case-by-case basis.

"They will invite these applicants in for a talk and the students may be asked to remove their tattoos or avoid wearing certain types of earrings," Education Ministry permanent secretary Kamjorn Tatiyakavee said yesterday.

He said the tattoos did not have to be removed if they were not very visible.

Earlier this month, the Association of Private Technological and Vocational Education Colleges announced its decision to stop enrolling students with piercing that stretches the earlobe and tattoos after available information showed that students sporting such features were often engaged in brawls.

Also, upon learning that some businesses refused to hire graduates with tattoos and stretched earlobes, members of the association believed that not enrolling such students would boost the image of vocational graduates.

"I have asked the association to review its decision, and it has offered to look into applications on a case-by-case basis," Kamjor Kamjorn said.

He added that not all tattooed individuals were bad and that some got tattooed out of personal beliefs or for beauty.

"Vocational schools should offer educational opportunities to all," he said.

555 Must be electronics schools as they are flip flopping on this issue!

Whist I don't have tattoos myself, preventing students from furthering their education is crazy.

A brave student should get a tattoo of "Long Live HM the King", and see if the school is brave enough to expel him for that. Gotta use the LM law to one's advantage.

Although I don't agree on a ban from the schools simply for having a tattoo I do believe the schools are correct to do so as well as believing that most employers would choose a non-tattooed workers representing their country over a tattooed person.

This is still taking away freedom of expression though regardless of the possibility that the student is throwing away his chances for employment in the future.

So they have now decided to judge the book based on content, rather than just looking at the cover! About time!

Does the minister realise how difficult it can be to remove a tattoo?

How expensive it can be?

And how ineffective it is in a lot of cases. The tattoo will fade but its still visible. (Edit: that's with laser treatment. Apparently smaller tattoos can be removed by cortical surgery in some cases).

Maybe technology and the ability to remove ink will get better but right now it's not really a viable option for a lot of vocational students.

Edit edit: Sorry permanent secretary, not minister.

There must have been big push back on this subject Tattoo or not does not make for a bad person LOL

I remember my day during the Beatles revolution Adults then where saying men with long hair should be bared from many things Same as this situation

Time for the adults to grow up

A kid scores top of his class and knows what he is about and employers don't give a flying truck about earrings and tattoos. More cosmetic surgery while the patient is dying.
