Condo managers want passport copies, do I need to give?

Featured Replies

I am renting through the owner, have never dealt with the people downstairs. They have stolen at least one package from me, and they are generally extremely rude/unwelcome. I signed the contract through the owners, they have my passport etc. Do I need to also give them to the staff working the desk? They want a copy of my GF and mine, they are not good people, I would rather not if I did not have to. Am I obligated to?

The Condo Association Rules will outline the unit owners obligations.

My gut feeling is that if it's requested, you have an obligation.

Check the Association Rules for clarification.

Condos and the like are obliged to let Immigration know who has moved in. No doubt they need a passport copy.

The passport itself is government property and should not leave your safekeeping.

I own mine, and I'm fairly certain they have a copy of my PP in the office. Every package is recorded, and has to be signed for. Don't be defensive, just get to know them, it takes a while. It can also depend on the number of farang in your building. They might just be bypassing the landlord, who was suppose to give them a copy. They have a right to know, who is in what unit, and are likely mandated to do so.

If you give them a copy just make sure you cross it (across the picture) and sign it, stating , for condo office records only.

That way they can't try and use for another purpose.

Tell them you'll give them a copy if they'll give you the package they stole.

Excellent advice. I have at times, given my passport copy out too easily when asked.

If the condo staff have stolen a package from you, gather all the proof you have of their theft and contact your landlord (condo owner) to get him to contact the Condo Manager with the evidence.

Just to add what Masuk said

The Passport belongs to the Government of the country you come from

I would only give them a copy

Because it is always hard to get the passport back

It is your passport

I would ask for it back ASAP

Defamation is the issuance of a statement about another person or business which causes that person to suffer harm. It does not have to be false to be defamatory. Libel is when the defamatory statement is published either in a drawing, painting, cinematography, film, picture or letters made visible by any means, or any other recording instruments, recording picture or letters, or by broadcasting or spreading picture, or by propagation by any other means. Defamation is both a civil and criminal charge in Thailand.
