Time frame for applying for the 5 year driving licence?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Could someone tell me if what's the "time frame" for applying for the new 5 year drivers licence (car) after the first one year licence is expired. My 1 year licence will expire in about a month. I wanted to renew it well in time, but for my surprise the certificate of address from the immigration takes 3 weeks so it will be tight to get the new licence done in time.

What is the policy or consequence of renewing the 1 year licence to the 5 year licence after the expiry date? I hope I don't have to do so, but just to know in case the papers don't arrive in time.

Thanks!

A friend did his 5 year more than 3 months after his 1 year expired.

You have up to one year after expiration date to renew without additional requirements or tests.

In fact, you must let it expire.

You must have one COMPLETE year on a one year licence to be eligible for the five year licence.

If you go early and insist on renewing your one year licence, they will only give you another one year licence.

Your five year licences will renew on your birthdays. As such, your first five year licence may actually be more than 5 years; it will be five years from your next birthday.

The temporary licences are now of 2 year validity..........not 1 year.

So I have 1 year after the expiry date of my first 1 year licence without any extra hassle. I hope so because the amount of hassle and paperwork I had to order all the way from Europe was slow and costly. Well anyway that's great news then in case the paper from the immigration arrives late.

I don't believe that you must let it expire? They said you can do it 2 months before the 1 year licence expires.

Also I don't know about the 1 year licences they give out right now but mine is a 1 year (not 2 years) and expiring in about 3 weeks.

Not sure about this. I read its one month.

Temporary licenses are issued for 2 years only since March 2015. So sure yours is (was) for one year.

Absolutely no known requirement for home country papers when extending.

For the new license its a different story (especially if you don't have an international DL).

As asked in the other thread: what immigration office and DLT is that?
