Tentative political timeline after the charter draft voted down
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- By October 6, 2015: A new charter drafting team is set up by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO). It will have 180 days to draft a new constitution.

By April 2016: A new charter must be completed.

September 2016: A national referendum takes place to pass the new charter draft. If it passes, a process of drafting organic laws will take around six months.

April 2017: A general election is held if the draft passes the referendum.

If it fails to pass the referendum, another round of drafting will begin or one of the previous Constitutions will be used.

This time please do it right. Give people their rights to choice who represents them and not some counsel of military leaders to decide when the country is in crisis and preform a legal coup.

April 2017 Election 2025 the next coup and between a Shinawatra (Yaowapa?) who steal all the countries money.

Wait at least 2-3 more years. Better 5 years.

There will be nothing left to steal in 5 years.....

So they cant draft a constitution that is acceptable to the people, even their own self appointed people and they will try the same again in a few years.

Their ability at coups and drafting constitutions to bring a decent result follows the same consistent backward thinking you would expect from the military who have no idea about anything but prancing around in flashy uniforms adorned with pretensious medals.

Basically an excuse to postpone elections forever.

Hey, idiots! Take the 1997 "People's Charter", tighten it up, make some corrections to it, then put it up for vote. Nothing difficult about that.

Does it really matter? Pass whatever constitution you want. Constitutions, like governments in this country, are made to be quickly torn up.

That would mean elections come too early for some people.

Charter rewrites and referenda are there to delay the return to a semblance of democracy.

But but but, wouldn't work as "we" didn't oversee it to our satisfaction.

However you are 100% correct, carefully review the 1997 charter as a reasonable attempt, make any intelligent changes considered necessary and vote on it - it's not rocket science.

If there isn't a forum rule saying one should not post while drunk then there should be.

I read the OP and realized if they didnot want a new constitution all the dead lines they have are totally unnecessary .

they say need new charter draft by oct 6 2015.Keep the old charter no need to do

!80 days to draft new charter constitution donot need that either already have one

April 2016 new charter must be completed. Keep the old one donot need

2017 election why not just have an election and forget the changes.

So who says the country wants a new constitution?

Who says the country wasnot happy with the old consttution?

Why not have a vote if the people want a new constitution or are happy with the old one?

Did anyone ask the people if they felt a new constitution was needed?

Is it mandatory to write a new constitution after each and every coup?

Best get this right the first time. As some have rightly mentioned Thailand has been witness to over 15 coups so now is certainly the time to make sure that coups are never witnessed again here by ensuring that Thais have a charter that cannot be manipulated allowing abuse at the detriment of the majority.

Prayut is ensuring the military will not be required to be the checks and balances in the future. He should take this opportunity and use it wisely.

Some how the term those who fail to understand history are doomed to repeat it fits here.

Will this timetable require Suthep to go back into the monastary until he's needed again for the referendum?

That alone might be worth the wait.
