Toshiba laptop power button not working properly

Featured Replies

Having problems with my Toshiba laptop power button. It takes 2 to 3 times before the power button will work after pressing it. Sometimes I have to hold the button down for awhile before it will start and sometimes it will start on the first time.

Does anyone know what to do about it that I can do by myself or recommendations where to bring it for repair if necessary.

I'm certain that it's only some dust. You wouldn't believe how many computers worldwide, especially in Thailand stop functioning just because of some dust.

Some tiny ants, or other animals are attracted by the heat. You didn't write what model it is, usually not too difficult to find the culprit.

Here're on this forum are some great members, who''ll immediately rush to the scene of your malfunctioning laptop. thumbsup.gif

P.S. In which area re you staying?

Please try to boot it without battery, if it's working normally to make sure it's not the battery.

Should it be the same result, please clean the contacts of your memory card(s) with a rubber and try it again.

Here's a movie of a guy who doesn't seem to be very advanced fixing computers, but you might see some things you can do by your own.

Good luck.

It is a Toshiba Satelite P745 and I am in Bangkok. How to get access to the button in order to check for dust or something?

So you think it is a bug?

(sorry for this reply, I just couldn't refrain myself)

Please try following first. Take your battery out and press the power button down for one minute.Disconnect your AC first !!!

Then try if it works.

Have you tried if it boots without battery?

There're quite a few knowledgeable guys on this forum. It that didn't do the fix, just wait.

Somebody will tell you what to do. if you can't take your machine apart by your own and do several tests, ( or clean it) then you better not do it by yourself.

Well, it could be dust, or an ant.

.P.S. I had a non functioning mouse pad at my DELL, went to a computer repair shop, where the "technician" told me that the whole part would have to be replaced.

But it was my lucky day and his boss, a good friend of mine showed up. He looked at it, made a few tests and told the super technician to clean it up.

Took an hour and I walked out, without paying. It was only dust. That was the time when the guy who's really a specialist told me that dust is causing the most problems.

Sorry, when I was trying to help somebody.

This is a good suggestion. But you need to also pop out the CMOS battery on the mainboard before holding down the power button. Otherwise it won't have any affect.

If there are any non-default settings in the BIOS they will need to be reconfigured afterwards.

Holy Shirley. Thanks for pointing that out. Wouldn't create new settings with the battery in. Unfortunately are some notebooks' batteries at a place where you have to have some technical knowledge to do so.

Really sorry for my wrong information. When you watch the one youtube video, where the "specialist" is showing how to troubleshoot, you might start to ask some serious questions.

He ordered a new charger set, but had a voltmeter to check it? I find his instructions a little bit confusing. I still don't believe that it was the USB unit. Could have been dust that disappeared through all his actions.

But OP, watching the movie in my first post will give you some good ideas and it might be helpful in the future. I got my notebook's hard drive cloned, using Acronis, once it dies I only change the HD and all is where it was before.

OP, please let us know what the problem was.(Is?)
