LUANG PRABANG: -- The Unesco’s World Heritage Town Luang Prabang launched yesterday its e-bus project along with an electronic vehicle station, according to Lao News Agency.

The buses will be driven along the main roads in municipal areas of the province to reduce pollution and strengthen orderliness in the city. The provincial authorities are also encouraging government officials to use more public electric buses, which are both inexpensive and environmentally friendly.

The e-bus project involves over 30 electronic buses, of which 14 buses have been provided as a grant from the Japanese government, operated by the Lao Green Company.

Each passenger will be charged 3,000 kip if they take a ride on an e-bus along one of four established lines and 5,000 kip if they take a ride on an e-taxi.

Each e-bus can take up to 7 people including the driver. This is for the case if the passengers are Lao. If passengers are foreigners, each e-bus will be able to take around 3-4 passengers.

The e-bus service has become popular among both local people and visitors, said project director Anouphab Phanalay.

The e-bus project is a pilot initiative sponsored by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Under the project, 100 electronic buses will be provided by Japan through 2017. If the implementation in Luang Prabang is successful, the project will be expanded to other major cities including Vientiane and Champassak.

This is brilliant!

The fare will no doubt reflect nationality, if I know Pathet Lao.

Fantastic,

look for them soon in Siem Rep and Bagan ( both places already have E-Bikes)

Don't get your hopes too high. It might be possible in LP with the UN looking on.

I would be interested to know where these are from and how much to buy one?
