Welcome to Thailand US ambassador to Thailand Mr Glyn Townsend Davies.wai.gif

Gee and the leader of Thailand is in US at this time. they didnot get to meet formally. Maybe passed each other over the pacific ocean.I bet they cannot wait to meet.

He just missed being the 22nd million visitor, and receiving a stuffed animal and a hotel discount certificate.

As he was leaving the airport, the following conversation was overheard:

"Turn on the meter please."

"Meter no work! No work!"

Welcome Mr Ambassador , you arrive Sir at an interesting period in Thailand's long history, it will take all of you previous skills with North Korea and the wisdom of Id , to manage through the day let alone a week , good-luck , Chainarong coffee1.gif

WM Syndrome...

WM Syndrome...

Yeah .. you are so right.

Well I guess his old habit gained from covert operations in N.Korea sneaking into Thailand when the PM is not around. Guess he thought he could mingle amoung other tourist by wearing a Hawaiian shirt, shorts and flipflops pretending to be an innocent tourist

I am sure I will see him at Plaza Anthenee this week for the Sunday brunch as I travel through to go back to work. It seems to be the standard procedure for US ambassadors on a Sunday.

Lets see if he does a few "selfies" of himself there like the previous ambassador did every second day.

As this person seems to be an East Asian specialist, this appointment appears to be a ceremonial retirement gift. Once upon a time the ambassadorship to Thailand was seen as a stepping stone for rising stars in the Foreign Service.

Looks like a solid WASP on his way to a cushy post. Have fun Mr. Ambassador!

Oh dear.....

Looks like a solid WASP on his way to a cushy post. Have fun Mr. Ambassador!

Now now now. Don't let his minority group ethnic status get in the way.

Finally, Prayut will have a shoulder to cry on when the USA doesn't understand.

I wonder if he'll encourage Prayut to embrace democracy too biggrin.png

Well, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see why it isn't any longer. thumbsup.gif

Finally, Prayut will have a shoulder to cry on when the USA doesn't understand.

Sign the TPP Trade Agreement on the dotted line, and the US will guarantee a soft shoulder to cry on and possibly throw in a box of Kleenex to boot. whistling.gif

It's going to be the same he will just carry out Washington's orders

New United States ambassador to Thailand, Glyn Townsend Davies, greets staff at the US Embassy in Bangkok

BANGKOK: -- The new United States ambassador to Thailand, Glyn Townsend Davies, officially took office yesterday, almost 10 months after the post became vacant.

"This was a great first day. Looking forward to the coming weeks and discovering beautiful Thailand," he tweeted on his first day.

"Good Day, Bangkok. I'm pleased to finally be here and can't wait to get started."

And then, after meeting with the staff at the US Embassy, he tweeted: "Great welcome from my team! Looking forward to leading this talented mission."

The US Embassy announced yesterday that Davies arrived in Bangkok on Tuesday. "I look forward to getting to know, listening to, and learning from people throughout the Kingdom. Through them, I hope to understand Thailand's rich traditions and culture. My goal is to deepen understanding between our people and to work together to enhance our mutual security and prosperity," Davies said in a statement.

Davies has 35 years of diplomatic experience. He previously served as a senior adviser at the US Department of State's Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs - a position he held since 2014.

Prior to that, he was the lead US envoy in North Korea negotiations and held senior leadership positions in the State Department. He also served as the US representative to the Vienna Office of the United Nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency, principal deputy assistant secretary of state, and deputy assistant secretary of state.

His previous overseas assignments included postings in the United Kingdom, Australia, France and Zaire.

The US ambassador's post in Bangkok had been vacant since the departure in November of Davies's predecessor, Kristie Kenney.

The void was filled by US charge d'affaires Patrick Murphy, who had been summoned by the post-coup government several times for perceived meddling by the US in Thailand's internal affairs.

I certainly hope so!

It's going to be the same he will just carry out Washington's orders

That is the job of any diplomat. He and all others are representatives of their governments. Are you suggesting he would gain your respect by going rogue?

It's going to be the same he will just carry out Washington's orders

That will be because the ambassador represents the government of his country.

I certainly wish him the best during Thailand's most tumultuous time.

Hopefully one of the items on his to do list is a performance review of the embassy employees, especially one bubble headed bleach blond airhead bimbo.

Who cares? Just another less than useful person

Well, I for one, think good relations between the USA and Thailand is important, considering the rise of CHINA. The new man seems to be more than qualified. Best of luck to him.
