WHO growth charts to be used for Thai children

NONTHABURI, 25 September 2015 (NNT) – The Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) is preparing to use the growth standards of the World Health Organization to monitor the growth and development of Thai children.

According to Public Health Minister Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn, the WHO growth standards will apply to newborns and children aged below five, starting from October. They will be evaluated by three indexes: weight for age, height for age and weight for height. The WHO growth standards have been adopted after a MOPH survey indicated that 15 percent of Thai children aged under 42 months lagged behind those of other nations in terms of development.

The move is expected to raise parent awareness of the importance of nutrition. The WHO and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) pointed out that proper nourishment not only supports the economy but plays a key role in children’s physical and intellectual advancement.

Yes it will raise the parents awareness if somebody could be so gentle to tell them. In Thailand, nobody.

Unfortunately though, even telling them will not make a difference. It is much easier to go out and buy junk street food than it is to cook a healthy meal and provide a balanced diet. Can you imagine a mother trying to tell her mother what to feed the kid? It will never happen especially since most parents dump their kids on their families.

Not all Thai parents are neglective of their children, those who care are more than likely to be aware of the tools etc. to ensure good health or are open to correct advise from responsible sources.

The problem may be that the WHO charts do not fully reflect the Asian parameters of acceptable growth statistics and in any case the data requires to be applied by competent people fully aware of the variables.

"The WHO growth standards have been adopted after a MOPH survey indicated that 15 percent of Thai children aged under 42 months lagged behind those of other nations in terms of development."

and the other 85 per cent are force-fed by their grandparents until they can hardly crawl / walk......
