Catalan government condemns ‘legal attack’ on regional leader

Catalonia’s government has denounced as politically motivated, charges of civil disobedience being brought against their acting regional president.

Artur Mas who won election success on Sunday with his separatist campaign is now being accused of holding an allegedly illegal independence referendum last year.

Josep Rull, CDC (Democratic Convergence of Catalonia) said the move would backfire:

“Efforts are underway to win in the courts what they were not able to win at the ballot box. Charging the Catalonian president turns him into a martyr known both nationally and internationally.”

The pro-unity opposition, Ciudadanos Party leader, Albert Rivera said:

“We are not going to interfere in the Constitutional State. If somebody is being brought to be legally accountable I think it is because there is something behind it.”

Although the full weight of Span’s constitutional law is being leveled against Mas, political analysts such Jordi Matas, Professor in Political Science for the University of Barcelona, can’t see how the legal move will have any affect.

“To start with, Artur Mas will become a (regional) congressman. And as such he will have parliamentary immunity. Hence the justice department will need the approval from the Catalan parliament for him to be formally accused.”

On November 9, 2014, the Catalan administration defied a court order and held what they called a symbolic independence referendum. More than 2.3 people voted and around 80 percent of them backed secession from Spain.

One more step toward rightful independence for many people who are being held captive by Spain.

Please stop continue shaming my country with your ideas ad with your lies. "The Spain steal us is as false as these politicians hear the wish of the majority of the people". You got only 47% of votes of Catalonia to claim the independece. Furthermore all these votes was collected from outside of Barcelona wich is the really important city of Catalonia. Where are all the important companies and most of the people live. The easy brainwash of the rural people gave you only a 47%. So where is the another 53%? You don't have any rights on secesion and please stop asking for more referendum. We had enough. We (spanish) are bored of this. Please go to the real problems and ask to your corrupt politicians who governed Catalonia during all these years where is the 3% of the stolen money...

Gracias por todo. Hasta la vista!

The Catalans, at least a part of them, are fighting a long way for more money to come to their region from Madrid. Of course, there are many less privileged regions in Spain. A smaller part of the Catalans, mostly the politicians, use the opportunity to ask for managing their own money. This is, of course, a shame. Like in a family, the father, who earns the most of the money, doesn't want to help his son to study.

By the way, does anybody know where Spain is on the map ?
