No-one said that grown up countries don't have any regulations.

However, most developed countries allow the sale of alcohol after midnight, which is what the topic is about. I can't think of any that don't, do

you?

What was said was that If a business wants to sell late, early or both, it should be allowed to, that is pretty close to no regulations.

For the exact regulations, maybe midnight is early, but in most Western cities with a population similar to Chiang Mai, I cannot find a bar with outdoor serving, live music, and open until midnight on every single day of the week, but I can find that easily in Chiang Mai.

Even in larger Western cities, it can be a challenge to find a place that is open past midnight on weeknights, even harder to find a disco.

So Chiang Mai is not really more restrictive than your typical Western city with a population of 2-300k people. The main difference seems to be that some venues are able to ignore the rules for longer periods, making expats think that this is how things should be, rather than be concerned about a system where rules are not the same for everyone (although Im sure there exists different licenses for bars/discos, as there also do in the West).

"Even in larger Western cities, it can be a challenge to find a place that is open past midnight on weeknights, even harder to find a disco."

Did you try looking in cities outside of Utah?

The state of Utah is the last place to go for a drink. Most of the west is 2 am closing and yes its enforced.

Don't kid yourself.....lot's of drinking there.....Years ago you carry in and they sell you set ups → glasses, etc.

When on the road for business I use to play darts.....Unlike pool the people are friendlier....On night in Utah I came in 2nd and every table welcomed me → and gave me a drink - and I being friendly drank them....Everything from beer to mixed to shots - was lit up more than a bunsen burner.....Almost ran through a thoroughly boarded and marked dead end street trying to get back to my hotel.....The ones that drink in Utah know how and where to.....

I love hookers, and they are found in bars, not bothered about drinking myself, but happy to buy them drinks while they rub against me.

That is quite good value.

Get a feel and a grope for the price of a drink.

How much is a ladies drink , 120B ?

Could you just give then 120 B for a grope ?

I usually buy them two drinks then a 200bht tip when I leave.

Depending on their entertainment value.

I think the beer girls in Santitham are a bit more fun than the LK bar girls. Depends upon what your ultimate goal at the end of the night is, of course.

Great prices - obviously set to maintain market presence!

Can't survive long on that kind of profit margin unfortunately.

Glad to hear about it though.

Yes, attitude adjustment may just have to involve hitting the scene a lot earlier than before.

No problem, right?

Anyone know how to research the changes in beer consumption (post anti-CM) and the impact on national brewers?

Really? I could have sworn I was paying less than 7-11 prices at Dayli for 10 years. Brah, Brah samesame, and a number of others. The Game was "upmarket"...or at least priced its beer like it was. It didn't end very well.

There's an old Chinese saying, "He that sell beer at double price; will sell furnishings at half price."

Boxing Arena is one stop schooling on why to not open a bar. How many of those places are for sale, as I type? I haven't bought a beer in there in more than five years.

Indeed. Took a stroll down tonight and thought 'is this it?'. Like a ghost town! The few bars that had more than one or two customers were very bloke heavy and I think the girls must have got Loy Kratong passes provided their mums stood in for them.

First time here so no idea what it was like before but for 10pm on a Friday night it was dismal. Largely checked it out on behalf of a couple of a few people I know that were contemplating having a change of scene for a birthday party upcoming. Best feedback I could give - don't bother. Doesn't bother me as we didn't come here for that but for those that do / did the BIB have sure done a good job of killing it, unless it was already like that.

Friday, should have come to the T-Bar in Santhitham (opposite Oxide Pub) with us.

About 25 girls in beer dresses serving, live music, Tiger Beer 200bht for 4 large bottles.

None of the girls appeared to be over 24 years old.

Saturday Night, Blar Blar Bar in Nimman Soy 7 was selling 3 large Chang for 150bht.

Live music, but the serving girls weren't so young or pretty.

I think large Chang for 50 baht is the price at Blar Blar for the time being. That is what they charged last Monday. Food is good too, and the portions are large for a Thai place. I agree the quality of the pretties isn't what it used to be, but there are still a few that put a smile on my face.

went to blar blar bar sunday, there was not 20 people in the place at 10oclock.pity been drinking there 5years or so,but new pastures beckon, the small bars home si,t club cafe, litis bar ect seem to be getting the traffic now, they do give u a choice of beer not just chang.

It was almost empty last Tuesday also (I posted Monday above, but realize I was off a day). However since I was there more to eat than drink (I did quite a lot of both), and I don't like crowds, I didn't mind. I think it still gets a reasonable crowd on Friday and Saturday, but due to my schedule and aversion to crowds I haven't checked for some time.

I also wish they had a better selection than just Chang, but since I consider Chang only marginally worse other Thai beers, and 50 baht for a large bottle is a good price, I'll use it to wash down the spicy food.

For those who don't find Blar Blar to their liking, there are many other choices along Nimmanhamin. Not all of them have beer prices that good, but some do. And for those who don't believe the beer promotion prices, why not actually check rather than appear foolish by posting that they can't be true?

Nimman is actually a lot better during the week, as are a lot of places...Lake Tahoe and San Francisco come to mind. Too many people with personal issues and prison mentality out on Saturdays. The possibility of getting a warm beer alone, is almost grounds for disqualification imo. Not too happy with Leos from Songkran, either, but that is more of a specific dirty deal not all participate in.

Who comes to Chiang Mai for night life anyway ?..i came here 6 years ago when i married my wife to get away from temptation .(we had been living in Pattaya ;-)

There's a lot of Chiang Mai nightlife that is hidden, unless one can speak fluent Thai. And it goes on well past midnight, provided the neighborhood cop gets his backhander.

" Married your wife to get away from temptation?" Somewhat unusual reasoning.

No need for "one" to speak "fluent Thai", your friendly tuk tuk driver knows all the places. Edited by roo860

True, but I would only ask a tuk tuk driver I knew and trusted for recommendations. Stopping a random tuk tuk driver cruising for fares after the bars close and asking him to take you someplace for illegal fun is risky for men, more so for women.

Was not meant to be taken seriously, it's the last thing "one" would do especially if under the influence.

A lot of talking about Santhitam vs Loi Kroh......can anybody explain better what is available in Santhitam? Name of the best places, what actually the girls there do (drink with you? Able to talk some english?) and if there are other foreigners going there or we are lost in a thai environment with all looking at you?

I would like to try go there sometimes but i always had the idea of a 100% thai place with thai music and only thai language spoken (i speak some but not enough for a conversation). Anybody in the know can help??

Apologies. However you should know that irony, sarcasm, and cleverness in general are risky on any TV forum. Many people take all statements seriously, no matter how ridiculous. No doubt some people took your statement as serious advice and might have followed it.

Yeah.. with a whole evening to work with, it's really much better to ask bargirls than a random tuk tuk driver.. More honest and reliable too.

"just ask a tuk-tuk driver".....just about the worst piece of tourist advice given in Thailand, and all too common. Freelance, bargirl, massage girl, or even girl scout would be a better person to ask about the whereabouts of anything. Tuk-tuk make a living by giving rides, and make even more if that ride is to somewhere they will receive a kickback. I've seen them threaten other Thais for giving walking foreigners directions. Red Songtaews are saints compared to the suk-suks...and of course theyre not all bad, but.....

Santhitham, 100% Thai, menu in Thai, music is Thai girls only talk Thai.

There are a few foreigners floating around, usually tourists with a nearby hotel.

How hard can it be to order beer and point at the photo of food you want?

Beer Promotion arai bang? = list your beer special offers?

They will answer 3 or 4 bottles (fingers in the air to indicate bottle numbers) and a price.

Tiger, see kuat yai, song roy baht = Tiger beer, 4 big bottles, 200bht.

Chang, sam kuat yai, nung roy haseep baht = Chang beer, 3 big bottles, 150bht.

Ice is extra, usually 40bht a bucket.

Thanks for the (non) answer. Thanks to luke000 too.

i asked about the girls, if "friendly" or not (you got it now?) not about if it's easy to get a beer or how much it costs.

You do realise that prostitution is illegal in Thailand and the discussion of it is forbidden on TV ?

It was putting the friendly in "friendly" quotation marks and asked what they do which suggested a nudge nudge wink wink , "what do they do" kind of thing .

What do the girls do ? Stand there . Drink leo. eat some food, talk to their friends, dance a bit, that kind of thing

I hope Gen. Puritan reads this:

New Labour's decision to relax drinking laws in the UK has been an "unmitigated success", according to a right-leaning think-tank. The Institute of Economic Affairs (IAE) said the Licensing Act, which came into force on midnight 24 November 2005, has benefited consumers and did not result in the "apocalyptic" results some warned about at the time.
"Alcohol-related crime is down, violence is down and rates of binge-drinking are down. The 11 o'clock rush is largely a thing of the past," said Christopher Snowdon, the director of lifestyle economics at the IEA.
"Those who want to drink until midnight, and often later, are now able to find at least one pub or bar in which to do so, with the added bonus that they are less likely to be assaulted, harassed or run over when they leave. We are drinking less, drinking slower and drinking locally. The prophets of doom were wrong. Liberalisation worked."

Yeah, pretty much. And serve you stuff. If you're lucky you get one pretty much dedicated to your table and you can chat and flirt a bit.

Personally I think it's okay when you're with a group of guys. But by yourself (or even you and a buddy) I think there's more fun to be had around Loy Kroh.

Neither is true,

Prostitution is not illegal in Thailand.

And I just talked about it on TV.

As for the Santhitham girls, some are, most aren't.

But I once went to Oxide Pub with a Thai gang member, and you wouldn't believe how he treated the serving girls.

All the rubbish you hear from foreigners, "treat with respect, don't touch, etc.", he just grabbed, and they allowed it.

But he did need a lot of tattoos and a silly hair cut to get away with it.

Well, you can mention it, but you cannot give people advive on participation, if you see what I mean

The CFNM bars on Loi Kroh Soi 3 and Khampangdin roads are still going strong with no police interference. It's a lady's night out place but great for a guy who wants to be the 'NM" - closes at 11pm - pays well.

Worth mentioning (for the wanna-be monger) that the beer promotion girls are not allowed to sit with customers, so it is not Loy Kroh-style beer bars where the purpose of the girls is to sit or go with customers.
