I'm not 100% sure of this, but I believe Air Asia is planning to continue to use remote parking and busing of passengers in order to save money. Not anything to do with the gates not working. I imagine other LCC will do likewise. I did see one Nok Air plane and one Bangkok Airways plane at the gate though this morning along with several THAI planes, so all three of those domestic carriers will use the gates, at least for some of their flights. The domestic gates were maybe at most 20% occupied. This was at 09:45 on Sept. 29. The domestic gates are located right at the end of the runway, so time from leaving the gate to takeoff is very, very fast. This is in sharp contrast to Don Muang where I often spent 20 minutes or more taxiing before take-off.
