I am trying to assist 2 elderly Cantonese speakers to find appropriate TV by satellite (they are not really capable of using internet TV). Does anybody know if I can receive Cantonese language channels by satellite and if so how?

Channel 3 Thailand has programmes with Chinese subtitles, there is a Movie on there right now with subtitles.

I would also talk to TRUE as you can turn subtitles on/off on various channels.

Press audio button on remote, available languages are displayed on screen to select.

The PSI satellite system use to have loads of CCTV channels, but they are in Mandarin. If you only want cantonese, the astro satellite in malaysia has cantonese channels. You can also get the astro channels through the internet, and will be cheaper than satellite.

There are plug and play android boxes for sale in HK that bypass geoblocking so you can watch the TVB/ATV serials etc. from anywhere.

I'm sure you can find them for sale online but probably need to search in Chinese language. Easy and probably cheaper for someone to buy in HK though.

Yes they connect via the internet but not much more difficult to navigate than a Satellite receiver.

From what I gathered with some quick research, most Cantonese-language programming package that features favorites from Hong Kong, Taiwan, and mainland China

FIRST, I would suggest taking a look at a couple of Web Links to identify what Cantonese-language channels they're interested in (as some channels are available free while others are only available through subscriptions)

These Chinese website for LIVE STREAMING OPTIONS with optional downloadable android apps for smartphone or tablet to watch Chinese TV.
or this FreeTV website highlighting Chinese TV Channels

SECOND, I would suggest taking another look as Internet Set Top Boxes that specialize in delivering custom streamed media and television programming.

AliExpress has a couple of Android Internet set-top-box that are set up to receive Cantonese TV

Smart TV Box With Hongkong TVB etc Cantonese TV Channels For Oversea Chinese People
Moon Box III
HK Taiwan Chinese Programs TVB ATV Jade Android 4.4 Quad Core TV Box
1. No dish, only 2mbps broadband required;
2. 223 live Hongkong, Taiwan + 400 China Mainland Live Channels (223 live channels Cantonese TV Channels);
3. No Buffer, No Freezing;
4. 2-4 second to swift channels;
THIRD, once you've identified some desired channels (and would rather go the Satellite Receiver route) then you can explore the media/programs uplinked via satellite. Again, many are FTA (Free-to-Air) while others may be available only via subscription package (some are available as both).
Take a look at distributors CCTV and Phoenix as the largest of the many groups providing satellite media/program content.
You can view a list of Chinese-language channels with their corresponding Satellite assignment (and possible simulcast IPTV links)
ChinaSat 6A 125.0°E C-BAND EIRP 38-41 dBW (150cm dish minimum)
ChinaSat 6B 115.5°E C-BAND EIRP 40-42
ChinaSat 9 92.2°E Ku-BAND EIRP >50 dBW >65cm dish minimum (Thailand location may be outside of signal footprint)
Telstar 18 138.0°E Ku-BAND EIRP >50 dBW >65cm dish minimum (Thailand location may be outside of signal footprint)

Sorry I couldn't direct you to somewhere specific.

...though JSAT.TV *might* know something about both (as they do both IPTV and SAT Set Top Boxes). You might try calling them.

A bit more...

TVPAD, another "Internet" Set Top Box specifically for Chinese-Language programming:

According to Wikipidia: TVpad is a Set-top box device that connects a TV to various channels in Asia with a broadband connection and uses an Linux variant as the operating system. TVpad's main market is to Chinese consumers in China, Hong Kong, as well as overseas. The TVpad4 is capable of installing third party apps.

Many on the Internet suggest you do a YouTube search for "Guangdong Language" (written in the Traditional Chinese characters), saying you'll find and endless amount of Cantonese-language material posted there, such as old movies, serials, and such.

Also YouTube search "RTHK"

More Internet media access sites:

RTHK.HK

www.gooddrama.net (multiple languages are highlighted)

TVB, ATV and TVS group media, many have written that the quality of their programming is declining.
