Friend's daughters expired Thai passport stamped at immigration on entry

Featured Replies

This of course needs to be signed by a solicitor?, maybe have one in Thai one in English?

The awkward issue is the notarisation. Now I made a notarised declaration for use in an uncontested transfer of custody in the Thai courts, which meant the expensive use of a 'notary public' (or whatever it is now), which involved the use of an 'apostille'. However, Thailand is not a signatory to the convention relating to their use, which is probably why the Thai consulate in London thinks they have to get involved.

Why would you go to the British Embassy to solve a problem with a Thai Passport? Go to the Immigration Department and have it sorted out - she certainly cannot exit Thailand on an expired Thai Passpo

  • Which won't work from personal experience. Best to start the process at the passport office. Get the right forms for a power of attorney. As then what they need ID wise from the non attending person

I'm really hoping for their sake that they can sort it at immigration tomorrow...not holding my breath on that though

....and submits a notarized consent letter of the non-appearing parent.

In the states, there are notary's everywhere, dont know about the UK

I would call the embassy an ask what they mean by notarized

that info looks right to me

I believe it is the passport office to which they must go, not immigration, for the application for a new passport.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place

I assume they want to try the "stamp the UK passport" route (correct the status to a 30 day exemption instead of the "seen at BKK" in the Thai passport)?

It is important to understand what the Thai passport here requires for the passport to be issued. So go there first. You are wasting your time with immigtation and the Thai embassy in London as starting points.

Just go down the passport office and ask the question, this is Thailand. Anything is possible if you ask.

Wherever you end up going, I think it might have to wait until next week. The 23rd, I believe, is a holiday.

Cheers guys for all the help and suggestions, very much appreciated.

What "error" was admitted ?

Thai nationals are permitted to enter the country legally on expired or near to expired Thai passports.

As I said I don't know the full story yet, but they sorted it anyway....will inform full story when I know it. It may prove useful for somebody in the future :)

Even though government offices were closed yesterday? Interesting...

Airport was open!

If the original intention was to enter Thailand on the UK passport, the error was to give the Thai passport to the immigration officer at BKK airport. Good to see that immigration changed it later.

Good news!
