I have flown with them several times through work Norway to Thailand and they were OK, clean planes and good service

Downsides if you transfer at Helsinki the airport is a bit of a scrummage when waiting to get on planes as the rooms and gates are small and they had little organization from staff the other thing that stuck in my mind is their hand luggage rules are quite strict in that you are only allowed one item so if you have a laptop and hand luggage only one is allowed onboard, for somebody like me who tries to travel with hand luggage only that can be a pain in the arse

They serve alcohol with meals but if you want more you have to pay for it but I thought Finnair was quite good really and I would happily recommend them...

Check that the flight goes with the brandnew A350! Delivered this month.

Seat pitch in standard economy still not great (31 inch) but having some kind of "thin" seats.

So winning an inch or so.

I have seen these really cheap oneways.

Exceptional.

But a return flight (Germany) still ends in the mid 30s.

Any idea how to check which plane they are using for a particular flight ?

Google the flight number and you will get details of the aircraft type usually used on that flight. However there may be substitutions for operational reasons.

I found it... Airbus A330-300

They have a somewhat funny inconsistence in their booking system.

All examples for Dec 9.

If I look for a flight from BKK to TXL they show "AY90", 9:05h from BKK to HEL, using A350-900.

If I look for a flight from BKK to LHR they show "AY90", 9:05h from BKK to HEL, using A330-300.

I'd be optimistic that it is a A350 tongue.png

If you query only BKK - HEL they show A350 for a whopping 22000 Baht oneway!

Book quickly and get confirmation.

Booked... 11,930 baht. BKK-LHR via Helsinki.

Flight from Bangkok to Helsinki on same day, same flight 17,500 baht !!

Both are indicating an Airbus A330-300, lets see what I get next week ?

I'll be wearing all my clothes anyway, only got a 45 min connection in Helsinki and can't risk my bag not making it :)

Carlos.............Just a tip-I flew MAN-BKK via Helsinki with Finnair 3 years ago, good price service below average (food portions very small-smaller than other airlines for sure) wine and beer free but spirits 5 euro,s-and the drinks service only comes with the meal so order as much-or as little-at this time. Also on the return leg Helsinki back to Manchester the stopover was 50 minutes and we were slightly (15 mins) delayed, ground staff on hand to speedily put us on our last leg back to Manchester thumbsup.gif only problem was that our luggage did not make the flight-was delivered to my home (28 miles from MAN airport) the following day..........so beware whistling.gif

Thanks for the heads up..

I planned just to take hand luggage because of the 45min connection in Helsinki :)

Hope the service is ok but as long as I can sleep, I'm happy... Airplane food sucks anyway..

I just flew Finnair to London via Helsinki. The scheduled connection time was 45 minutes. The flight from Bangkok was 15 minutes late into Helsinki. I made the connection and so did my bag.

So, how was the flight ? Comfort, service, in flight entertainment etc ?

Flew with them in April, business class out which was ok, return economy which I did not like, couldn't get to sleep and rubbish IFE, beer 4 if I remember right, long 10hrs from Helsinki. If price is your main thing you could not beat it but personally would rather pay bit more for Emirates.

if I remember right, long 10hrs from Helsinki.

Not so long compared to other non-stops to/from Europe.

Individual times depend much on jet-stream and detours (currently a lot of areas better to avoid).

Shortest flight I ever had from Germany was Munich to Bangkok in 9:30h.

But that was a hell of a jet-stream blowing.

747 braking the 1000 km/h.

Other extreme was BKK to FRA during gulf war. Airspace closed for a short period.

Routed via China and Russia, flying into Siberia (!) and then "left turn"/westward.

About 13h bah.gif

The problem with Finnair is that once in Helsinki you still have another 3 hours to get to anywhere worth being. And that's generally (though not always) on a smaller regional aeroplane. So even if you pay for business class you may just end up in economy seats (albeit with an empty seat between you and your neighbour) for an entire 3-hour sector.

If you fly with a gulf airline then you should get big planes with all facilities on both sectors.

Total travel time to LHR is 15:05h.

HEL to LHR is an Airbus A320. 2h flight.

Nonstop flights are 13:05h to 13:15h.

For a connecting flight thats not too bad?

There is always a price for a cheap flight (2h of your time).

Total time to Berlin is 14:55h.

Completely acceptable.

VN is on this route also a good solution. Booked for next week BKK-HAN-LHR-HAN-BKK in business class for 59' Baht. They also serve LHR with their new 787.

Took to Amsterdam. Same, flight delayed in BKK and min time to xfer. Ended up in AMS without luggage - bought 2 top line winter jackets and some stuff for 40k and happily claimed it on the airline and insurance

I used them a few times in the past when they were using the old McConnell-Douglas planes and they kept them running for ever. The flight times are decent from the UK as Helsinki is more or less on a great circle route. Price was always the big selling point and still worth checking. Downsides: 1. the food was disgusting. Horrible meatballs in slimy sauce. Recommend you take something with you. 2. breakdowns/cancellations: after the second time when the plane was going to wait a long time for a part to be flown out, I gave up. Maybe things are better now.

.... at least those MD-planes are history now. Not that the A340 they use at the moment is a particularly modern aircraft LOL

HEL/LHR seems to be 3 hours whenever I look at it.

But total travel time with Finnair is indeed usually quite low because they shave the connection time to the bone. No other airline I know of would dream of allowing only 45 minutes for an onward connection through a hub. And the downside of short connection times is the possibility of delayed luggage, as others have mentioned.

Instead of running through an airport I would rather spend a couple of peaceful hours in a nice lounge, with a relaxing shower and some decent food and drink, and wifi that works etc. Still, each to his own.
