I think I'm going to need a new passport for my next marriage extension. But how?

I recently done my extension based on marriage. My passport expires in February, 2017. The immigration officer tried to explain to me that I will need a new passport before my next extension if I want the full 12 months of the extension, else the extension would expire at the same time as my passport. Can anyone confirm this please?

I thought I read somewhere that the extension could be transferred to the new passport, so no time of the extension would would be lost.

More importantly, can anyone please advise me how I can get a new passport in Thailand. (British passport)

How many months before a passport expires can a new one be applied for?

Is the whole thing a tricky, difficult process or is it fairly straight forward?

Regarding the extension, is it transferable once I have the new passport?

The original non-o visa in my current (soon to be old) passport, so would I need to apply for another non-o and then do the whole extension process again?

I really need to know exactly what to do in the right order and with all the hurdles I'll need to jump through for a new passport, and continue things with my annual extensions.

I really don't have a clue about this, so anyone who's done this before can share their experiences about applying for, and getting a new passport in Thailand, with the issues of their current visa and/or extension would be really appreciated.

A new passport can be applied for at any time.

You will only be given a "full" extension if the passport is valid up to/beyond the date of the extensions expiry.

If you are given a "short" extension it will match the date of the passports expiry.

Once you get your new passport with the current extension, don't worry, just visit your local immigration office and they will transfer all the necessary stamps, including information about your O visa and current extension, into your new passport. For free. Such a deal!

To add, your embassy will return your old passport to you which of course you need to transfer the stamps. Also be sure your embassy provides you with a formal letter requesting that Thai immigration do the transfers between the passports. This will be a form letter they already have but make sure you do get it.

Yea, about a year ago the rules changed to where your retirement/marriage extension would only be extended to the expiration date of your passport when your passport is expiring before the full 12 month period normally given extensions. If say your passport expired 6 months from now you would only get a retirement/marriage extension good for 6 months. Then once getting your new passport you had to reapply for a new extension....they won't just transfer over the old extension and stretch it out to 12 months to the new passport like they use to. So, during the last year of your passport's validity it's probably best to renew it early to get it more in sync with when you normally apply for your annual marriage/retirement extension...try to get them sync'ed up expiration-wise.

Is there any embassy that would not normally return the old passport (assuming the old passport exists and hasn't been compromised in some way)?

Of course the old passport will be made VOID for further use.

I assumed all embassies return old passports.

When my old passport and new passport arrived at Trendy building as I was not in BKK. My sister in law picked it up and sent it on to me. I did not have the letter from the British Embassy but I still decided to go to Nan Immigration to get the stamps transferred. The Immigration officer did mention a letter but I just literally emptied the parcel that came from England showing all the leaflets and wot not and asked her does this look like a fake passport. After she asked a senior officer, she transferred the stamps and it was all over. I guess it depends on the office and the officers just having common sense. I mean, would a forged passport come with supplement information from the British passport office. Maybe I was lucky but I do not live near to BKK so I decided to take the risk and I had no problems.

Well it was a good thing, as you are not an immigration officer...............and so your opinion does not matter to me. I got the stamp and that's that. I did not throw the contents at the officer, I simple placed all the items received onto her desk. Her boss accepted they were all good and that was it.

In Thailand a British passport holder always retains possession of his/her passport when applying for a new one.

There is no need for the passport to be "returned" because it never leaves the holders possession !

Not to be picky, but a U.S. passport can be stamped with a Canceled stamp and then given back to the applicant with the new passport.

Of course, the old passport is not valid as it is stamped canceled, but it is returned to the applicant when he or she receives their new passport.

As I type this, I have my old canceled passport s9tting on the shelf in front of me.

What is done with the old passport is dependent on the Nationality of the passport owner.

You can apply for a new British passport at any time, but you could lose a period of validity from the old passport.

The UK will transfer up to 9 months validity of the old passport onto the new passport (10 years 9 months).

You could apply for a new passport from May 2016 without losing any period of validity.

Current reports suggest it takes about 2 weeks for the new passport.

You didn't state exactly what month your extension is renewed.

Picked up my renewed USA passport Monday at the Bangkok embassy along with letter to immigration requesting the transfer of all current visas/extensions. Next day I went to CW immigration for the transferes. Filled out the request for transferes along with copies of relevent visas from old passport. Completed my retirement extension first then had to take a new que # to get transfer of my multiple entry visa. Fairly straight foreward process. Now I am good for another 10 years and have an entire passport with many blank pages. Don't forget the new dress code at immigration. No flip flops or shorts. I did notice only one guy with shorts but no one seemed to care and one idiot wearing tank top. Again, no one said anything.

OP, don't worry. Just follow the link on post 2. It really is easy. I had to renew mine a couple of months ago. The staff at Trendy are good.

Make colour copies of your old passport locally before you go though. 25 baht a page in Trendy! Pro forma letter for Immigration will come with the new passport.

New UK passports are done in the UK via VFS in Bangkok, the British Embassy is not involved.
