Germany: Merkel moves to reassure over migrant influx as coalition divisions deepen

"I am working on reducing the number of refugees"

BERLIN: -- Chancellor Angela Merkel has reiterated calls for other EU members to take in more migrants and refugees as her ruling coalition comes under growing pressure from the unprecedented influx entering Germany.

With talk of a million or more asylum seekers arriving on German territory this year alone, Merkel’s coalition is increasingly divided.

Making a fresh call for other EU members to do their share, the Chancellor tried to reassure those at home who believe Germany’s ‘Open Arms’ policy has gone too far.

“I am working on reducing the number of refugees,” she said in Darmstadt on Monday at a meeting of her CDU party.

“I just don’t think – and I am speaking to those who believe that we should close Germany’s border with Austria – that this will solve the problem.”

Angela Merkel is under pressure as her own party fears #refugee crisis will cost votes in upcoming state elections https://t.co/7zkVJ8fo1K

“We have agreed on something the meaning of which has not really yet come to light – the rejection of a multicultural society,” said Bavarian premier and CSU leader Horst Seehofer.

But whether that is the case or not, Merkel’s Social Democrat (SPD) coalition partners have dismissed the demand – putting the Chancellor under pressure as tens of thousands more migrants and refugees stream through the Balkans.

And with record numbers entering Europe by sea last month – “roughly the same as for the whole of 2014”:
http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/11/02/us-europe-migrants-un-idUSKCN0SR15P20151102 – Merkel has warned that if Germany’s border were to close the resulting bottleneck could even trigger military conflict between Balkan countries.

The day of reckoning is nigh, Merkel have played the benevolent humanitarian German leader to show the

world how Germany is willing to intake a million economic refugees without clearing it first with

people and The Bundestag, and now it comes around to bite her on her ass, so predictable, but now,

that the refugees are in already it will be a an impossible task to put the genie back in the bottle....

Merkel invites the whole Islam world to invade her country. Then she demands that the EU take some. They tell her to shove it. Now she, her stupid government and the whole of Europe is being invaded. Then she says it is all under control. You are a joke Merkel and some other Chancellor and government will have to try and sort it out. Except it is probably too late. What beats me is who is going to pay for 1,000,000 illegal economic migrants. VW is going to have to pay 20Billion in US, to fix their deceit. Then people are going to stop buying the cars. Then every country is going to fine them. The VW is going to ask Germany for a bailout. Where is all this money going to come from I ask the taxpayers of Germany.

Merkel is a giant. She is showing tremendous heart and soul, and responding to this crisis like no other country. I know many will scream, she is taking the Muslims. The reality is that most of these people are poor Syrians, who are probably quite moderate politically. Prior to the beginning of Assad's recent brutality, there was not much extremism coming out of Syria. She is showing other countries what humanitarianism looks like. And she is really making countries like Saudi Arabia look heinous, with their extreme lack of charity and compassion. They talk a big game, but when it comes time to help, other than dropping some bombs, they are completely lost. And where is Thailand in all of this? How many refugees have they offered to take in? Even Malaysia has offered to take in 3,000 refugees. Good on them. Charity. It opens the heart, and shows the world where you stand.

Assuming you don't hold a grudge against Christians, how many are you taking in your house who are fleeing the very real threat of death & oppression in Africa / M.E.?

Of course you reassure. A nuclear bomb could be 100-feet from your head, and some will say, "oh, don't worry, it will be alright."

The world will be in great chaos during the next 100,000 years.......so i need chaos now so i don't miss too much!!!!

Merkel speaks for Germany, but think she rules the EU.

She created a ludicrous problem with her "welcome all and sundry".

When the shit hit the fan she tried to coerce EU countries to accept her will. You take the problems I've created.

The Syrians, and all the economic refugees who jumped on the bandwagon should be sent back to their own countries. It is not Europe's responsibility to look after them, feed them, house them and accept their culture.

These people are inherent trouble makers who have fcuked up their own countries and will do the same wherever they go. They demand this, demand that, show no gratitude and humility, have no respect for the people in host countries, their culture or religious heritage and are happy to break laws when it suits.

The suppression of crime statistics in certain countries, to protect immigrants and Moslems is disgraceful and a distortion of truth for political purposes.

What is not clear is Merkels real motivations, and political agenda, for doing this.

The rest of EU should tell her where to go, and so should the German electorate.

Maybe Bavaria will seek independence.

The mad woman of Germany Frau Merkel should be removed by the use of a sanction order, she is definitely mentally unbalanced.

She continues to show her total inability to understand the truth and the subsequent consequences of her pronouncements and orders upon Germany, its peoples and also Europe.

The creature the mad woman of Germany Frau Merkel is a far greater menace than Hitler ever was in his time to Germany and Europe..

Why should I be under any obligation to accept any of these fake refugees? I'm the one opposing their presence. You on the other hand are arguing for their acceptance. I merely think that if you really do believe in taking them in, why not start at your own home?

Perhaps Merkel could reassure people by demonstrating most of the influx are from Syria and are refugees. She can't because they aren't, though the MSM studiously avoid such basic questions this is the crux of the problem. Austria are just about to pass legislation to stop Afghani migrants from settling there, Afghanistan, not Syria.

Mass immigration = problems. In the case of these Muslims, that constantly declare that they cannot, and do not want to integrate, these problems will be very long term and massive. I was a socialist most of my life until I saw the way that liberals and socialists were ruining Europe in the name of 'being nice'. Muslim refugees should stay in Muslim countries, if Germany feels so deeply for these guys they should send money for resettlement camps away from Europe. What is happening now is in direct contravention of the Dublin convention. If you break a regulation in the EU concerning sausage casings you get landed with the full weight of the law. For something so incredibly momentous as this, the law has been ignored.

Cheap work force? In the end they won't be so cheap.

The German Constitution supports genuine refugees (so far it's estimated somewhere around 40% are estimated to meet the criteria). As I recall Merkel only offered support for only those that meet the criteria; the big challenge is how Germany is going to enforce deportation orders. I do agree an error of judgement was made with her public declaration. Additionally the complacency by many countries evidenced by minimal support for countries hosting millions of refugees was a major mistake. Numerous other errors of judgement have been made. At the same time continuous denigration of all Muslims by some is not going to help the situation.

Scott has answered a number of questions concerning the legal status of refugees, his responses are ignored in pursuit of personal agendas.

I hope millions of refugees will follow, as long they are all remain in Germany. After the last refugee arrived, build fences and walls around Germany and throw it out of the EU. I would love to pay taxes to build the fence.

(freely translated).

That is very scary....basically he tells it isn't up to Merkel.....A christmas present for all conspiration theorists......

I would normally take RT news with a pinch of salt, but I do find this believable, it comes as Austria legislates to return refugees to their home Countries within 3 years if deemed safe. I wonder whether gun sales in Germany are on the up?

https://www.rt.com/news/320026-austria-gun-sales-spike/

Well they speak about it and there is already resistance against it.

And nothing is sure.....Austrian politics is a complete mess....the PM is a former taxi driver who can't find the certificate from the school he made before (and neither teacher nor other students can remember him) + 7 years in his curriculum vitae are missing. That is not disturbing anyone......

So what they tell today about changes in laws.....can be complete forgotten tomorrow morning....
