Phuket Governor Chamroen Tipayapongthada has decided that beach goers should be allowed to put their loungers and umbrellas anywhere on the beach.

PHUKET: -- Phuket Governor Chamroen Tipayapongthada has decided to back track on an announcement made on Oct 28 by Vice Governoe Chokdee Amornwat that visitors to Phuket’s beaches wanting to use loungers and umbrellas will still have to do so in the dedicated 10 per cent zone.

The decision has been confirmed to The Phuket News today (Nov 5) by Gov Chamroen who understands that tourists should have the choice of sitting outside of the 10pc zone with their loungers and umbrellas should they choose to do so.

However, he also confirmed that the rule may well change when each beach has its own rules and regulations finalised.

V/Gov Chokdee confirmed on Oct 28 that the 10% beach rule was to stay after he concluded his third meeting with local police, district officials, community leaders and beach operators in Thalang.

The 10% rule allowed vendors renting out umbrellas and sun loungers to tourists to occupy not more than 10% of the beach area. The rule was one of many introduced by previous Phuket Governor Nisit Jansomwong in January as part of the beach cleanup campaign ordered by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), headed by Prime Minster Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha.

Consequently, the same rule meant that beach-goers were not permitted to use even their own umbrellas and sun loungers outside the designated areas. (See story here)

Speaking to The Phuket News today, Gov Chamroen said, “All beaches belong to public so it would be harmful if we restrict people from using their own items when on the beach.

“However, by the end of this month each beach will finalise their own rules and regulations and they will be the final rules which everyone must follow.

“The beach committee will have to supervise and make sure that at this time beach vendors do not take advantage of the current rule and do rental services on the beach,” he said.

Gov Chamroen also stated that he had learned of previous problems that occurred during the last beach management system when tourists were allowed to bring loungers and umbrellas to the beach.

OMG, it was so much simpler when the kinds of people using the beaches didn't give a 'fig' about chairs, umbrellas or vendors, RIP Phucket beaches!

Finally some sense.....Wait, did I read it was subject to change and every beach will make up their own rules? Another can of worms to go along with envelopes.

Exactly - toursist can take their own stuff anywhere on the beach and not jostle with the vendors in their 10%

One country one rule,,,Not every beach has it own rules,,,,Public beach,, public can use their own table/chairs/loungers,,,,if they don't want to use their own they can rent them,,problem solved,,, C'mon Government get serious get your shit together and make it a Law!

A proposed law in 2010. Was it finalised as a law?

It's good to keep up with current affairs.

I can see problem with any arrangement where there are Thais trying to get you to pay for stuff, within their 10% area of the beach and Farang who want to bring their own gear. I respect the rural Thais I know, to not be hot hearted. But how do you see a Thai beach vendor reacting to a Farang, who places his chair and umbrella, on the 'free' side of the 10% line.

I can't understand a lot of posters.

You want go and sit on the beach, presumably to enjoy what it has to offer.

But don't want your bum on the sand nor be exposed to the sun by having a sunlounger (whatever that is) and an umbrella.

Why go to the beach in the first place? You could save yourself the time and effort and whine at home.

But someone will have to teach the thais what 10% is.

The Thai's know exactly what 10% is.

There are 10 Thai's on a beach - each has 10% of the beach - that equals 100% of the beach - that means farang must pay. biggrin.png
