Savannakhet golf course, other things to do

Featured Replies

I was bored senseless when I visited Savannakhet.. :)

When I visit for my next visa I will be bringing my own transport so I can drive around a bit.

Yes, not much to do, but I'm getting a new visa and it happens to fall on a holiday, so my two day stay is now three days, so looking at alternatives to sitting on the Mekong and drinking Beer Lao all day :).

My only other suggestion is the Casino. The missus and myself enjoyed a day hitting the various tables. It is nothing special but it will help "fill" the day. The hardest part of the trip for the missus was not being able to get the midnight bowl of noodles.. :)

Ok, while in Savannakhet I found that the area around the Catholic church was pretty busy at night. Maybe this was due to a public holiday period, but there was certainly a number of tourists eating and drinking outside of the many establishement.

I did manage to play some golf, but it wasn't easy. Once I showed up at the course, the price went up from the published 7 USD rate on their website, to 150,000 kip with club rental ( about $20 USD for 9 holes of pitch and putt basically). After playing my round, I found myself about 6 km from the city with no transport options available. I ended up hitchhiking and caught a ride after about 30 minutes.

I met up with a Finnish guy and his gf and they told me about their excursion to some lake park. They ended up paying 1000 baht to go to something that is similiar to the lake parks all over Thailand.

Savannakhet has certainly come a long way in the last 15 months when I was there last both in terms of price, as well as some infrasctructure upgrades.

On a parting note, I found myself down by the Catholic church late at night ( 11 pm) and there were virtually no tuks tuks available, so I got plenty of walking in, The city itself felt very safe "late" at night when walking back to my hotel.
