AOT approves budgets for resolving problems at Suvarnabhumi Airport

The Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited (AOT) has approved a 215-million-baht budget for conducting research on the impacts from the opening of Suvarnabhumi Airport. The meeting also allowed the CEO of AOT to draw emergency fund for helping the surrounding communities of Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Mr. Chotisak Asapaviriya (โชติศักดิ์ อาสภวิริยะ), President of AOT, said that the meeting of the AOT Board of Directors had approved the budget for conducting research on the effects of the new airport to the surroundings, especially on the noise pollution. The urgent measure is to purchase lands located in the north of Suvarnabhumi because the people in the area are suffering from noise due to planes' taking off and landing at the level of 75 decibels.

As for residents who are suffering in a lesser degree, AOT will install sound-proof materials to protect the communities from the disturbing noise around the airport.

Sounds like a brilliant idea , but perhaps it would have been even better to research the impacts of the airport during the planning stages ??

Gosh no, that would add another 20 years to complete :o

Am I reading the translation correctly, that 215 million baht is being budgeted just to conduct research? That's 21,500,000,000 satang.

Again, smell a fish here. KL Airport is yonks from KL, Suwanna-boom is smack in the middle of urban area, with Tons of houses. Used to work for about 2 years at an Airport in Oz, and yes, people built houses close to the runway "cause the land was cheap". We used to have to take the plane to the outskirts to run full engine tests after maintenance - should of heard the phones ring at the office every time we did this.

Why governments build airports smack in the middle of a built up area, and why people build houses near runways has always miffed me.

Smell a fish in the sense that you dont have to be a rocket scientist to figure out there will be complaints about noise when building an airport on the swamp.
