wonderful. This sort of post brings out the worst readers who are so irrelevant they are funny.

The idea of the ban in crowded areas is fine by me; why do dipsticks want to carry their bottles of alcohol down to the sea or river when observing a religious festival? Beats me?

Am I wrong in thinking booze is banned in UK recreation venues sports stadiums etc without the blog sites going burp?

Is Nongkhailad in the centre of Bangkok?

Is it a cultural event to know that a small store off the beaten track never visited by police sells alcohol out of hours?

Is the fact that alcohol was allowed last year at all relevant when considering the law this year?

Ah well if only we could see the posters in real life. Are they gin swilling fat naked men pretending to be teenage girls....I wish we could observe....

It's banned in areas where Loy Krathong is being celebrated.

If want to drink, go somewhere else.

If want to take part in Loy Krathong celebrations accept you have to do it sober...or at least no drunker than when you arrive.

It's hardly the end of the world.

It just about covers places like Phitsanulok where the Nan runs right through it.

It is treating the public like children once again and damping down the occasion for toutists at the same time IMO.

If drunks act like children they deserve to be treated like children.

You want to drink? Don't go to events where it is banned.

I couldn't agree more, if drunks act like children......................

What i am saying is what about the rest of the normal adults who want to interact with maybe a couple of beers as has been the case for decades for Loy Krathong? Without getting drunk, only enjoying themselves.

What about the livlihoods of the smaller bars and restaurants that mark this occasion as a good sell day?

Tremendous way to bring happiness back to the Thais IMO.

It was the public i was talking about, not the children......................wink.png

I really almost feel sorry for you drunken slobs out that just need another excuse to get drunk.

While I get your drift, it's not so much a case of another excuse to get drunk as it is about someone making it even slightly inconvenient to get drunk for a few hours each year. Like it upsets some kind of equilibrium in the world.

I won't count this one toward the 200+...

For most of us who during our lifes, worked full time jobs that may range from 40 to 50 or 60+ hours per week - when a holiday comes that is exactly the time we wish to relax, have a few drinks, and let go of our day-to-day life. I get it that some people don't drink. At the present time, neither do I. But I don't support a ban on alcohol during secular, non-religious holidays. It's like saying you can't have a BBQ and a keg of beer during the 4th of July in the US. I also understand demarking a few alcohol free zones especially in parks, but a freaking country-wide ban during a holiday akin to the 4th of July or Labor Day in the US??? Ridiculous. In this case it's an unelected government decreeing morality. A law like this would never pass a parliamentary vote. It would be like Obama issuing an executive order banning alcohol during the 4th of July. How many of the junta members and military elite will be alcohol free during the holidays. Want to make a guess? It would be about as likely as Senator John Boehner or any of the rest of the congressional alcoholics remaining alcohol free during the 4th of July if Obama decreed 'no booze on Independence Day because it offends Muslins'. Don't think that can't happen either.

Maybe I'm wrong, but the way I read it, this is a ban at festival sites, not a nation-wide all-venue ban on sale & public consumption. I admit, I don't know what exactly counts as a festival site, but I'd guess it has something to do with where crowds gather to watch or participate in L-K related public events. I really think some of the hysteria about this is misplaced.

But I also think that only a mental baboon equates all "drinking" with being "drunk". All that was really ever needed was a directive to Tourist Police to patrol the festival sites and escort out anyone behaving badly due to inebriation, which you wouldn't even think required a special directive. No need for totalitarian pronouncements that really don't bring much happiness to the people...

You'll see by many of the replies, that people are brainwashed into thinking having a good time means drinking alcohol.

This is after years and years of hard advertising by Alcohol Corporations, they've accepted that drinking poison, a poison that alters your mind, is somehow good for you, unbelievable how people fall for ir, then again, look at the fools that smoke, I mean c'mon, that's just plain stupid, but they were led to believe it's macho, sexy , cool etc by advertising.

Yeah they are really cool things to do, both are poison, would you take small amounts of arsenic each day and think it's sexy, macho and cool ?

So you only eat lean free range meats, nuts, organic fruits and vegetables. No coffee, sugar, refined salts, no nothing? Almost everything you consume contains poisons, be it ethanol or whatever, Mind altering? What's wrong with that?

I don't drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes, some of you people are almost making it seem like it's a bad thing....like I'm wrong, like I'm missing out on something, blink.png

What am I missing out on ?

What you're missing by a country-mile is that not everyone accepts your drama-soaked-yet-somehow-comedic characterization of alcohol as "poison", and it's quite possible for someone drinking in moderation nearby to have far less impact on you than you have on them by imposing your values (as if you have a god-given right to do that which trumps their freedom of choice).

A ban on public smoking I'd go along with because it's NOT possible to do that in proximity to others without adverse impact on them. Simple.

You have the freedom to poison yourself as much as you like, the governments make far too much money taxing your ' Fun ' to ever stop you, I choose not to.

I repeat what am I missing out on, how would smoking and drinking improve my life ?

I've said it already and I'll say it again, stop fiddling and do the prohibition you're gunning for. Can't wait for all the good bootleg and secret pubs filled with interesting folks. Idiots.

It's hilarious how being unconcerned by alcohol not being sold at festival venues one day a year gets characterised as Puritanism or thinking of alcohol as poison. Bit of an overreaction there, chaps.

I like a drink. I like several drinks even more. But these is a once a year, peaceful family event. It wouldn't even occur to me to try and buy a beer at loy krathong. Not everything is an excuse for a piss up.

Seriously Bluespunk give your puritanism and defence of indefensible governments a rest.

I have at no point said anything condemning those who drink. I drink (occasionally true but nonetheless) and am not so hypocritical as to preach against its use as a Puritan would do.

I am merely saying if you don't like the rule on drinking don't go.

Is that simple enough for you to comprehend? If not let me łnow and I'll try using words of two syllables or less.

As for my views on the current govt perhaps you should read more threads and get a better perspective before puking up your judgemental BS.

Or does thinking beyond the immediate make your head hurt?

Moral high ground? What are you on about?

You can enjoy the evening. You don't need to go if you want to enjoy it with alcohol, if you want to enjoy the loy krathong events don't drink if the rules say not to.

It's nothing to do with morals it's just about accepting the rules of an event you wish to attend.

I only accept "the rules" IF I accept the ones that make the rules.

Ni Dieu Ni Maitre

So we all have to follow your rules do we?

You deducted that from what exactly?

You and others like you on this forum make the surrounding countries seem much more appealing than Thailand under the rule of a draconian regime. If your views are typical of the majority of foreigners living in Thailand, then I will be looking elsewhere for my oriental paradise.

Would appear to indicate you decide the rules of accepting rules...

So if a rule is made, and it doesn't matter what rule or by whom, we should accept it as just and sensible and unquestionably obey it. What a boring and mindless attitude to life you espouse. Totalitarian regimes thrive on the likes of you.

And how exactly have I done that?

Because I think that if an event bans alcohol then fair enough, it's their event?

That's your definition of draconian?

You need to get a better dictionary....

Wow loads of alcoholics on this site. Alcohol and crowds dont mix.

Its atrange how many people cant have fun without alcohol.

Nothing worse as drunken idiots spoiling it for all. Sure not everyone that drinks gets drunk but a ban like this is far easier to police as escorting drunks out.

That would lead to fights.

The way i read it you can have your alcohol fix outside the celebration area's so no huge loss.

Surely there is a rule against that.

The problem is that when Thais drink, they drink to get drunk. There is no concept of the one gin and tonic, or glass of wine when the sun goes down over the yard-arm, while sitting on the varanda in evening dress, and being pleasantly fanned by a punkawallah.

So what are you, drinker, smoker, both ?

You have the freedom to poison yourself as much as you like, the governments make far too much money taxing your ' Fun ' to ever stop you, I choose not to.

I repeat what am I missing out on, how would smoking and drinking improve my life ?

Alcohol might improve your sense of humour.

So, by my not drinking or smoking, you deduce that I have no sense of humor ?

Therefore if I was a drunk in a lung cancer unit, I'd be hilarious ?

Right, I see your point, I'll start drinking and smoking immediately. blink.png

Haha....you cannot make this rubbish up

The decision to ban alcohol and control other dangerous items like balloons and floating lanterns during the festival was taken by the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department.

This is comical. I can understand them wanting to ban alcohol in the areas a lot of people will be. I get that. If you want to drink, do it in a less crowded area or just show up twisted beyond belief. burp.gifdrunk.gif

Controlling dangerous items like BALLONS and FLOATING LANTERNS during the festival.....ummmmmm.....forgive me but you FLOAT a <deleted> LANTERN during the festival.post-4641-1156693976.gif Thats what its about. Perhaps I am wrong and if so, slap me silly and call me Sally. Dangerous ballons???? Really??? Are we talking airship or hot air ballons??? Noooo...must be helium filled ballons. Oh in that case.....pull your damn head out. crazy.gif The only danger these have is........ummm......thinking.....mmmmmmmm......not seeing this one. unsure.pnghuh.png
