Thai-language.com Not Working?

Appears to be broken, perhaps updating the site. Don't know if it is the same as www.thailanguage.com, which does work?

Totally unrelated.

I think it is a matter of waiting until the caretaker reboots the server.

If a cron's not taking care of that, or if it takes THIS long to get a server rebooted, then perhaps it's time to change hosts (or operating systems).

I guess a "We're working on the server, please be patient" is too much to ask.

Given the current constrained circumstances, yes. I doubt the system has been deliberately taken down, and I suspect the caretaker does not know there is a problem. Of course, he may be awaiting technical advice from the site owner.

The site is still down. This was by far my favorite Thai learning site. I've even built programs based on extractions from it. I wish I could buy the entire site on CD. Anyone know how to contact the administrator?

I used Google to search for 'thai-language.com' and in the listing for the site clicked on 'cache' and the page comes up (cached). The author email is shown in the cached page.

I can't find the email. Can you send it to me, you can pm me if you don't want to post it on the board.

PM sent.

Thanks I've got it. I sent Glenn an email, I'll let u know the outcome.

I don't think anyone is monitoring Glenn's e-mail, though just possibly Glenn might be able to read it before Christmas.

The 'caretaker' is Asda, who is an American teacher of Thai origin. I think he teaches in Seattle, but I've forgotten his surname and I can't find any trace of him on the web, let alone work out how to contact him.

I PMd wasabi with two e-mail addresses, the 2nd was embedded in the source code of the cached webpage and points to his own personal web-site. Will have to wait and see.

If you do a search on Thaivisa for thai-language.com you will see there is a bit of history of its being unavailable and other problems, including it being shutdown for a while for other reasons.

I didn't get a response to the email but I'm glad the site is back. I am still interested in purchasing the site on DVD or something. I'd love to install it on my harddrive for rapid searching and audio playback. I think he should offer it for sale to help support himself and the site.

In the FAQ on the site it clearly states:

Can I buy this site on a CD?

Due to contractual agreements regarding some of the data sources that we use, I'm sorry that we cannot release it on CD at this time. Also, our current server technology is not designed with a CD in mind. Developing for dual platforms (Internet and CD) would strain the resources of this effort—remember, this free site is created and maintained with donations and by volunteers.

Additionally, when you use the site live on the Internet, you always see our latest data. A CD snapshot of our data would not benefit from the many corrections and enhancements that we are constantly uploading. Of course, the CD product could be updatable, but this would be yet another sizable design and development effort.

I do agree with you though, I'd like to have a "local" copy of the site since I would often like to look up something and don't happen to have connectivity. I guess one could "wget" the entire site or use some other form of GUI site-ripper. But at this point I'd prefer to respect the creator's wishes.

I hadn't seen that before but do respect his wishes. Many applications these days have gone webbased using an active server approach. However I've found non of these are ever as fast as a desktop application. With a desktop application the loading can be almost instant if you have a fast computer. However even with the fastest internet connection there is always some wait. Anyhow the site is back up so having it on CD is the least of my worries.
