Big waves cause havoc in the South

PAK PHANANG: STRONG winds and three-metre-high waves this week eroded a 100-metre section of the Pak Phanang-Hua Sai Road in Nakhon Si Thammarat's Pak Phanang district, and affected local residents.

Two families that live near the road were evacuated as a precaution after their homes in Tambon Tha Phraya's Moo 2 village were severely damaged.

Fisherman Prachuap Chorpook, 53, used to live in the area along with 10 other neighbours but waves during the wet season forced most families, including his, to relocate. This has left just two families in the area. "The house and land that I'm rightfully entitled to was consumed by the sea, while state agencies come [to inspect the damages] and go like the waves every year," Prachuap said. "Affected residents never get remedial measures for this trouble."

In related news, 20 families in two seaside villages in Tambon Khok Khian in Narathiwat's Muang district were also affected by big surf on Friday night.

Several homes were flooded and families had to seek refuge at their relatives' homes. Sections of a two-kilometre-long beachside road were under sand and rocks.

Why don't the mention the effect of the full moon, which obviously worsens the situation due to the monthly high tide? Most of the coastline along the gulf coast has been eroded about 20m over the last 60-70 years, old locals tell me. But much of the erosion is due to poor land use planning, such as shrimp farming here in Ranode. In Pak Tre (a subdistrict) of Ranode they are building a little harbor to shelter small fishing boats during the monsoon season...my bet is that it will silt in in no time...I am going over this morning to check it out...

Just a few pix of the situation along the beach in Ranode, Songkhla this morning.

In the article, Prachuap, who lost land and his house on it, said. "Affected residents never get remedial measures for this trouble." Sad that the government has given land to poor farmers elsewhere in Thailand, but not to these very few poor owners having lost houses and the land under and around them. A little more of Thailand disappears into the sea from natural causes and there's no relief for those stricken???????
