Changing vehicle registration when moving to new province?

Featured Replies

Previously lived in Chaiyaphum now moved to Khon kaen. All our vehicles have Chaiyaphum plates. Do we need to move registration to here?

All my vehicles have been BKK registered and Ive never lived there.

Has never been an issue.

I believe the only issue is when renewing the car license?

Yes, it was like that in the past but now you can renew anywhere.

The only advantage of changing plates to your new province is that, the province gets your fee and can put it towards their road repair fund ....

Are you talking about the road tax ?

I have never driven to bangkok to renew mine, I do it in Chonburi.

And maybe BIB a little kinder to locals? Speaking of they're out in force now. Collecting for NY parties?

There is no obligation (nowadays) to change plates.

Yearly tax/mandatory insurance can be done at every DLT.

Some may have an extra counter for "out of province" registrations.

So many Bangkok registrations here (Khon Kaen province) and people live here.

Is it a rumor that many/most cars on finance will be registered in Bangkok?

You will always have people tell you about the advantages of having a "local plate".

Less likely to be stopped at road checks etc.

No idea whether there is anything behind.

I think the province that collects your road tax , will get most of it. I've been driving 8 years with plates from another province , where I never lived .

You don't need to do anything but pay wherever you are. You can change to the province you live in if you want but there is no requirement. Not sure of the ppw required if you do but you can ask.

All I know for sure is that I bought a new Nissan pickup in Pattaya. I moved upcountry and never changed the plates. Ten years and was never questioned. Renewals were done locally with no problems. In fact I never did it myself. My wife always took care of the registration and insurance.

When we bought new in Chiang Mai we were offered Bangkok plates (for a small fee). The missus wanted Udon plates as she didn't want anyone to think she comes from Chiang Mai...

Police encounters:

With BKK plates (white Pajero, 70.000km) only while driving on the "highway" in Isaan.

With Udon plates (black Vios, 40.000km) stopped every single time in BKK and sometimes in Phuket.

With Phuket plates (black Fortuner, 60.000km) never stopped anywhere.

Probably also a matter of vehicle ;).

Udon plates are bad tongue.png

They drive down the yaba/ecstasy highway.
