MISSISSIPPI, USA -- With the festive period comes the onset of tornado season in the US.

Severe storms across the south and midwest have killed at least seven people and injured dozens more.

In northern Mississippi, authorities report four people died when a tornado raged through the state, touching down in Clarksdale before moving east into Tennessee. One of those, a seven-year-old boy is said to have died when the car he was travelling in was struck by a tree.

Two people have been confirmed dead in Tennessee and one in Arkansas, while several people are missing, according to emergency and law enforcement officials in the region.

Dozens of homes have been damaged or destroyed and holiday travel plans severely disrupted in some areas.

Parts of Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama and Mississippi should remain alert to storms, according to the Storm Prediction Center.

There is no global warming... There is no global warming...

There is no global warming... There is no global warming...

Will you get real, please? There are about 1,000 tornadoes in the US every year. Most of them are harmless and often damage is due to where they hit.

There is an area through there known as "Tornado Alley" that's touched off by warm moist air from the Gulf of Mexico meeting cold dryer air from the Rocky Mountains and from Canada. It's been called Tornado Alley for longer than you've been alive.

It's a real shame that this hit a populated area, but this has been happening for longer than people have been keeping records of it. It's "news" because people and property are destroyed, but it's nothing "new".

Cheers.

I used to live in Oklahoma City in the heart of Tornado Alley. My newscast routine was:

Today a tornado struck downtown Durant (pronounce DOO-rant) Oklahoma. Three people were killed.

... and turning now to sports.

Not good anytime of the year...but on Christmas Eve...double the heartache...

AND...it ain't over yet folks...the bad weather is still making its way across the South...from Texas through numerous states all the way to Georgia and Tennessee...

Some say it is retribution for not voting for Obama and not signing on to his global warming as the number one enemy of the US...many people in the South think he may actually be...
